Three major iPhone 16 upgrades leak – all to improve AI

We’ve already heard a lot of rumors about the iPhone 16 and its focus on AI, especially iOS 18. However, some rumors claim that Apple could go even further than that, and perhaps surpass its rivals, by adding additional hardware for AI processing.

The first is from a well-known leaker @TechReve (Via TechRadar) The iPhone 16 will come with additional RAM and storage space, with AI claiming to give it more headroom. Analyst Jeff Pu (via 9to5Mac) also believes the A18 Pro chipset will power the phone’s on-device AI.

Unfortunately, Tech_Reve’s X account appears to have disappeared over the past day or so. But we still got to see what they said about the iPhone 16 and new RAM and storage upgrades. According to the original tweet, the company is considering the possibility of a base iPhone 16 with 8GB of RAM and at least 256GB of storage.

For reference, the iPhone 15 only comes with 128 GB of base storage and 6 GB of RAM, with 8 GB reserved for the iPhone 15 Pro. Because of Apple’s enhanced hardware and software optimizations, iPhones typically require less RAM than their Android counterparts. Therefore, his current leap to 8GB is a huge deal.

This means Apple can provide a lot of on-device AI processing without having to send it to more powerful cloud servers. Many Android AI features needed to do this. For example, the only version of Google Gemini that fits Android smartphones is Gemini Nano, and the rest of the work is done off-device.

This goes against Apple’s privacy philosophy, so the less cloud processing required, the better. However, if Tech_Reve’s claims are correct, it would mean that the rumors that Apple might use Google Gemini in his iPhone 16 become a little less likely. But Apple may once again have to accept the fact that many of its high-performance AI functions can’t be performed on mobile. We’ll just have to wait and see.

As for the A18 Pro chipset, Jeff Pu believes there are a number of changes made to the chipset to accommodate Apple’s on-device AI upgrades. This includes his 17 GPU version of the chip with more die area than the A6 Pro, which could mean more transistors or specialized components to handle on-device AI.

However, 9to5Mac points out that this can introduce further design flaws and cause issues with energy efficiency and heat dissipation. Let’s hope Apple learned something from last year’s furor over the iPhone 15’s thermal issues.

Pu didn’t go into further detail, other than the fact that the A18 chip is in higher demand compared to the A17 Pro, which should come as no surprise. Previous rumors suggest that the new chip will continue to use TSMC’s 3nm process, which should offer improved energy efficiency and performance compared to 4nm chips like the A16 Bionic. It is also said that all iPhone 16 models, not just the Pro models, will have the A18 variant.

We still don’t know much about what AI features Apple plans to offer with the iPhone 16 series, or which features will be available on which models. There’s still plenty of time until the phone launches, though, and until then you can check out our iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro hub for all the latest news and rumors.
