Apple has discontinued MagSafe Duo, a 2-in-1 charger for iPhone and Apple Watch. But if you’ve found a charger-shaped hole in your life, Twelve South’s new ButterFly just might be able to fix it.
Similar to the MagSafe Duo, the ButterFly comes with two magnetic charging packs in a foldable design. You can charge your iPhone and Apple Watch or AirPods at the same time, and Twelve South claims this is “the world’s smallest 2-in-1 USB-C MagSafe charger.”
ButterFly comes with a 20W adapter for fast charging and four international plug adapters, so it can be used in various international locations (currently US, UK, EU, and Australia). The whole thing is designed to be travel-friendly, and the thin and lightweight design helps.
Comes in an aluminum case to protect the components. The Apple Watch charger pops up so you can use the wearable in nightstand mode, and the pack can also power up your AirPods case (if it works with a wireless charger).
Naturally, all this does not come cheap. The ButterFly costs $129.99 at Twelve South’s store, making it even more expensive than the MagSafe Duo (albeit only a 99 cent difference). One problem with the MagSafe Duo is that you can buy rival devices at a fraction of the price, and that’s the hurdle Twelve South’s product has to overcome.
Alternatives to MagSafe Duo
The MagSafe Duo seemed like a smart idea for a gadget, since it requires only one free outlet to charge two devices at the same time. Not only that, it folds up neatly and takes up very little space in your bag, all features that made it ideal for travelers.
The only problem was that it used a Lightning port, but the European Union and its Digital Markets Act (DMA) forced Apple to switch the device to USB-C to avoid violating the standard. Then it stopped working. Law.
There was some speculation that Apple would replace the MagSafe Duo’s Lightning port with a USB-C port, but the company simply discontinued sales right after the iPhone 15 event in September 2023.
While we wait to see if the MagSafe Duo comes back, if you want a small, good-looking, high-end travel-friendly alternative, Twelve South’s ButterFly is a good choice if you don’t mind eye-watering prices. It could be an option. .
