But did you know that there are countries that actually take care of most of the travel and logistics for retirees on their vacations? Consistently ranked among the top countries in the world for retirees, Spain is a member of the European Union. For the first time in the country, certain seniors and residents were given access to heavily subsidized vacations that included transportation, meals, hotels and other expenses.
The program is run by Spain’s Institute for the Elderly and Social Welfare (IMSERSO), which calls the concept “social tourism.” The bottom line is that investing in travel for seniors can improve their health and keep them active and positive. An IMSERSO spokesperson told Euronews in February: “IMSERSO’s tourism program contributes to active aging and the promotion of active lifestyles, while promoting intergenerational solidarity and increasing employment and economic activity. and promote solidarity between regions through travel between different regions.”
Discounted travel takes place during the “shoulder season” from October to June each year. For the 2023-2024 season, the Spanish government has set aside 886,269 accommodation slots for retirees under its social tourism program. This is 70,000 more slots than last year. Prices for these vacation packages range from 124 euros to 435 euros, depending on the destination, length of the trip, and whether transportation is included.

What kind of trips are eligible for assistance?
Trip types range from 4-day city breaks to 5-day “nature tourism” trips that focus on exploring the natural areas of a particular region, or 6-day cultural trips that explore several towns in a particular region. It ranges from excursions to tours. There are also longer holidays of 8-10 days in some regions along the coast of Spain and in the islands of the Atlantic and Balearic Seas.
What destinations are included?
Destinations covered by this program include towns and cities in popular regions of Spain, such as Andalusia, Catalonia and Valencia. Visit Granada, the capital of flamenco dancing, relax in the quiet beach town of Castellon, or soak up the culture and energy of Barcelona.
Some of our nature-focused itineraries include destinations like Asturias, an autonomous region on Spain’s northwest coast known for its breathtaking terrain, including dramatic seaside cliffs and jagged mountains rising above green hillsides. It also includes excursions to a number of impressive regions. Or choose to visit the Aragon region, which is located in the Pyrenees and home to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Parks.
For longer trips, holiday bases such as the Canary Islands and Balearic Islands are also on the list, with sunny and iconic destinations such as Ibiza and Mallorca.

Programs typically include lodging and meals, insurance plans, and sightseeing expenses, although some of the inclusions vary depending on the travel package. Many packages allow travelers to choose whether to include transportation to and from their destination.
