The QS World University Rankings have been released, with MIT topping the list for the 13th consecutive year, followed by Imperial College London and the University of Oxford.

Topping the list is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, which has topped the rankings for the 13th consecutive year.
The next two universities are both in the UK: Imperial College London, which has risen from sixth to second place, and the University of Oxford in third place.
Harvard University remains in fourth place this year with a score of 96.8, with Cambridge University just behind it in the top five with 96.7 points.
This year’s annual assessment will be the largest ever, with more than 1,500 universities participating.
It is based on the analysis of millions of academic papers and expert opinions.
Indicators used for the rankings included academic and employer reputation, faculty-student ratio, number of citations per faculty member, proportion of international faculty, proportion of international students, international research networks, employment outcomes and sustainability.
Here is an overview of this year’s top 10 universities based on their ranking indicator scores.
This year, the United States was the country with the most universities represented, with 197 universities making it into the top rankings, but Europe was equally successful: European universities, primarily from the UK, made up half of the top 10.
The UK has the second-highest number of universities ranked, with four in the top 10.
Top European Universities
According to the rankings, the best universities in Europe in 2025 include Imperial College London (98.5) and the University of Oxford (96.9), both of which are ranked in the top three globally.
Among European universities, it was followed by the University of Cambridge (96.7), ETH Zurich (93.9) and University College London (91.6).
After the UK, Switzerland has the most European places in the top 10, led by ETH Zurich, ranked 7th in the world, and the Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL).
France and Germany also ranked in the continent’s top 10 with PSL University and Technical University of Munich respectively.
Honorable Mention
Internationally, mainland China has the most universities on the list, after the US and the UK, with 71 universities.
Two Chinese universities, Peking University and Tsinghua University, made it into the top 20 with scores of 88.5 and 86.5 respectively.
Singaporean universities also ranked highly, with the National University of Singapore (NUS) in the top 10 and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) ranked 14th in the world.
