The University of Arkansas Poultry Science Department hosted the National Collegiate Poultry Judging Contest Nov. 5-7.
During the contest, nine college teams from around the county traveled to the college campus to compete in the two-day contest.
“We are honored to host the national competition on our campus each fall,” said David Caldwell, chair of the Poultry Science Department and director of the Poultry Science Center of Excellence. “In total this year he had 39 students and his 20 coaches participate in the competition. It’s always so great to see so many college students excited about poultry science and this competition. It’s rewarding.”
Participating universities were Auburn University, Kansas State University, Mississippi State University, North Carolina State University, Ohio State University, Texas A&M University, University of Arkansas, University of North Georgia, and University of Wisconsin-River Falls.
The top winning teams are:
- 1st place: Texas A&M University
- 2nd place: University of Arkansas
- 3rd Place: Auburn University
- 4th place: Ohio State University
- 5th place: Mississippi State University
The University Poultry Judging Team placed 2nd overall, 2nd in Division 1, and 2nd in Division 2. Team members include Delaney Roberts, Crystal Velasquez, McKayla Williams, Kayla Wilson and coach Dennis Mason.
Roberts, a sophomore studying poultry science, placed third overall and second in Division 2. She is from Keller, Texas, and says her poultry judging team is what got her involved in the sector.
“Poultry judging is an opportunity for me to become more active within the division and continue the competitive activities I enjoyed in high school,” Roberts said.
Working on a team can be fun, but it can also be hard work.
“It was very rewarding to come in second place as a team because everyone worked so hard to score and perform to the best of their abilities,” Roberts said. .
Williams is a third-year poultry science student from Fayetteville, Arkansas. She placed 7th overall and 5th in Division 2. Her favorite part of her review team experience was learning about the quality of her chicken products.
“I love learning about the details of chicken and eggs that most people overlook but that make a difference in quality for the industry and consumers,” Williams said.
Wilson, a senior poultry science major, is from San Antonio, Texas. She placed 9th overall in the contest. She had been competing on that team for her three semesters.
“Competing as a poultry judging team for the past year and a half has been the most rewarding experience I’ve ever had,” Wilson said. “I learned a lot from Mr. Mason and grew as a judge and a person by being on this team. It added value to my skill set and helped me prepare for job interviews. I am sure it helped me in the process as well.”
Velasquez is a senior majoring in poultry science from Springdale, Arkansas.
