Apple will launch its last affordable iPhone SE in 2022, and while the previous iPhone SE launched in 2020, the company will skip a year this time and launch the next iPhone SE in 2025. . That’s reiterated today in a new report from South Korea. .
When the next iPhone SE is released, it will come with a feature never seen before in this affordable price range: an OLED screen. All previous iPhone SE models had an LCD panel instead, but now the cheapest iPhone is finally here.
According to the report, three display manufacturers are currently vying for orders from Apple for the upcoming iPhone SE, with Samsung (perhaps surprisingly) offering the lowest price per panel at $30. BOE is offering $35, while Tenma is offering $40. No company has been awarded the contract yet and negotiations are still ongoing, as Apple reportedly countered with just $20 per panel.
The panel used on the upcoming SE is similar to the one seen on the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14. So we should expect the 2025 iPhone SE to have a 6.1-inch screen with a resolution of 1170×2532 and a peak brightness of 1,200 nits. There’s even Ceramic Shield glass on the top (though that hasn’t been confirmed, so it could be skipped to save on the cost of the full package).
According to a South Korean report today, both Samsung Display and BOE have secured good yields with these panels, but Tianma could become a serious competitor as its technology lags behind the competition. is said to be low. Samsung’s advantage (and probably why it offered the lowest price) is that Samsung makes the iPhone 14 panels, so you can use all the tools for that, or even your existing panel stock if you have it.
Samsung can also afford to lower the SE’s price to ignore BOE since it can earn more from the panels of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 series. Meanwhile, BOE needs all the additional orders it can get, as it faced difficulties manufacturing iPhone 15 panels last year, missed an opportunity to increase production capacity for OLED panels, and awarded more orders to Samsung Display.
