With iOS 17.2 for iPhone, Apple released the Journal app to help users record and reflect on everyday moments and experiences.

The Journal app encourages users to reflect on their experiences with personalized suggestions powered by machine learning, a subset of artificial intelligence. But one feature that caught people’s attention is the app’s “Discover by Others” setting, which is enabled by default.

According to Apple, Journal uses Bluetooth to “detect the number of devices and contacts around you” and “improve or prioritize suggestions.” Essentially, Apple wants to encourage you to capture special moments when you go out to dinner with friends and family or attend an event. This detection feature is enabled by default for all Journal app users and must be manually disabled to disable it.

What’s the problem with the Journal app on iPhone?

There is no inherent privacy violation in the way the Journal app works on iPhone. The app was announced as a feature in iOS 17 last year and received positive attention as a new “real” way to organize your memories and write down experiences to remember and reflect on.

The Detect Nearby Devices feature is intended to improve your experience by providing personalized suggestions based on your activity and interactions. Apple insists that this information is stored on the device and not shared with the company, and says it doesn’t store which contacts are detected in your surroundings.

This feature means other nearby iPhones can discover your device via Bluetooth and get suggestions to your phone to add entries about moments you shared together.

The “Discoverable” setting doesn’t reveal or share personal information or diary content with iPhone users. Instead, it works anonymously as an extension. If you find this feature offensive, you can turn it off and continue using the Journal app.
