Apple unveils iPhone 15 and Apple Watch Series 9

Last year, the European Parliament Rules passed Smartphone batteries sold and distributed within the EU must comply with specific design and recycling rules. The most important factor for a smartphone is that the battery must be easily replaceable with a new unit. The law applies to batteries in different product categories, including electric scooters and cars.

All thin and foldable smartphones must comply by 2027, but Apple may comply sooner. One of the iPhone 16 models could come with new battery technology that’s easily swappable, according to five people involved in iPhone manufacturing.

Currently, iPhones use adhesive tape to secure the battery in place, and removing any remaining adhesive requires pinching the area with tweezers and applying a little heat — a difficult task without the specialized machines and trays Apple provides at the Genius Bar.

To comply with the new law, Apple will instead use “electrically induced adhesive removal,” a method of removing the battery that uses a “small electric shock.” rumor Rumors of this battery release method have been circulating since last winter.

As The Information reports, you’ll need to “pry open” the iPhone yourself, which is still no easy task since all the pieces are connected and screwed into place, and Apple’s demonstration of the tech will likely come with a warning strongly encouraging people to seek professional help before attempting any repairs themselves.

Apple can get an exemption from the new EU battery law if it meets a set of specific criteria, such as maintaining at least 83% of its battery capacity after 500 charges and 80% after 1,000 charges. The battery capacity ensures that the devices are reusable, and reduces the amount of waste required to prevent users from having to replace their entire phone because it no longer holds a charge.
