Former NFL cornerback Vontae Davis has died, Davie (Florida) police confirmed to USA TODAY Sports. He was 35 years old.
The cause of death was not immediately known. Police said they were called to Davis’ residence in Southwest Ranches, Florida, where they found the man’s body.
Police said preliminary evidence suggests there was no criminal activity. The Broward County Coroner’s Office is also investigating, according to WSVN.
News of Davis’ death first broke through the social media accounts of Illinois men’s basketball assistant coach Chester Frazier. Davis, a native of Washington, D.C., played at the University of Illinois before going on to a nine-year career in the NFL.
Davis was drafted in the first round (25th overall) by the Miami Dolphins in 2009 and spent his first three seasons there. For the next six seasons, he became a mainstay for the Indianapolis Colts, earning back-to-back Pro Bowl appearances in 2015 and 2016.

“Very saddened to hear of the passing of Vontae Davis,” Colts owner Jim Irsay wrote on social media. “A great man, teammate and player. My prayers go out to Vontae’s family.”
The injury kept Davis out of five games the following campaign. He signed with the Buffalo Bills ahead of the 2018 season, but famously walked out of the locker room during halftime of the team’s Week 1 game and retired.
Davis expressed relief at his heavily criticized decision, telling ESPN that it was “one of the best decisions of my life.”
“I went to the bench after that series and all of a sudden it hit me,” Davis said in a 2018 Andscape article. “I’m not in that field anymore.”
Davis recorded at least four interceptions in four seasons, finishing his career with 22 total. His older brother Vernon was a standout tight end who played 14 seasons, most of them with the San Francisco 49ers.
