Citing the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border as one of the biggest vulnerabilities in his re-election campaign, Biden urged Republicans to join the Senate’s bipartisan security agreement, which Republicans recently scrapped at Trump’s order. He again called for an end to resistance.
“We can fight to fix the border, and we can fix it,” Biden said.
The border deal would overhaul the asylum system and give the president new powers to effectively close the border if a certain threshold of illegal immigrants is reached. But Trump called it a political gift to Biden and encouraged Republican lawmakers to oppose the deal.
Mr. Biden emphasized the toughness of this proposal in his speech, but there were voices of opposition from Republican lawmakers in the audience.
