Critics’ reactions were mixed, with some strongly positive and some dubiously negative, but they all agreed that it was a highly image-driven, idea-packed, sensual, and challenging film. It seems like it is.Comparison with the Wachowskis cloud atlas That seemed obvious given the separate but linked stories of people that resonate across time.

Polygon’s critics, on the other hand, were unconditional fans of the film. He said this was “his purest science fiction experience that cinema can offer.” beast, is actually a stylized high-concept riff on Henry James’s 1903 short story “The Beast of the Jungle,” focusing more on emotion and experience than on the mechanical details of reincarnation or the flashback process. This creates an engaging and immersive experience. . From his review:

beast‘s three timelines play on the seemingly unmixable genres of classic period romance, gripping horror-thriller, and dystopian science fiction. Although it separates them physically, Bonello unites them aesthetically and emotionally. Through long, thought-provoking close-ups of Gabriel and Louis in each section, he creates a sense of timeless longing and solitude, connecting past, present, and future human experiences and making them sharp and chilling. It’s put into context. .

The trailer is mostly impressionistic, with flashes of energy, sadness, and anger, and few details about the story. But if you want to know more about what is by all accounts a pretty challenging and complex film, check out the distributor’s description.

The year is 2044. As humans routinely “erase” their emotions, artificial intelligence controls every aspect of our stoic society. Gabriel (Léa Seydoux) continues to fall in love with various incarnations of Louis (George MacKay), hoping to rid herself of the pain caused by her previous life’s romance. First, set in Belle Époque-era Paris, Louis is an English man who woos her from her cold husband, then in early 21st century Los Angeles, with an upset American who seeks violent “retaliation.” Become.

Will this process allow Gabriel to fully connect with Louis now, or will the two be doomed to repeat their previous fate? Visually bold director Bertrand Bonello (Saint Laurent, Nocturama) has created his most accomplished film to date. Inspired by the fin-de-siècle novels of Henry James, this is his science fiction epic filled with mounting terror and a haunting sense of mystery. punctuated by career-defining triple-role performances by Seydoux; beast It poignantly conveys humanity’s struggle against dissociative identity and emotionless existence.
