Bangkok, May 8, 2022 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is pleased to announce that according to the 2021 Visa Global Travel Intention Survey, Thailand has been ranked the fourth most attractive travel destination in the world post-pandemic, with Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai and Hua Hin topping the list of Thai cities searched for online by global travelers.
The survey, conducted between January and October 2021, analysed data from over 7,000 keywords searched by travellers from 62 countries, Thailand travel information for five tourist cities in the country, and traveller sentiment regarding the impact of the pandemic on the travel situation.
According to the survey, the top three motivations for global travellers to visit Thailand are leisure activities (30%), the opportunity to relax and escape reality (25%) and outdoor adventures (18%), indicating that visitors are seeking a stress-free getaway that offers the perfect opportunity to relax, get outdoors and forget about pandemic worries.
The survey also revealed that during their stay in Thailand, tourists are most likely to head to the activities and attractions that have made Thailand famous. The most preferred activities are going for a famous Thai massage, eating Thai food at a cafe or restaurant, spending time at a resort, and immersing themselves in Thai culture such as visiting Buddhist temples.
Visa, citing a Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) survey, said Thailand’s tourism industry is showing signs of recovery, with tourist numbers expected to increase over the next three years, reaching around 46.96 million by the end of 2024. The continued easing of tourist entry requirements throughout the year should encourage tourists to return to Thailand.
