A Texas woman has been arrested for allegedly leaving her children at home on a cruise.
According to a criminal complaint, Lakesha Woods Williams, 29, went on vacation on April 4, leaving her 8-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter alone in their Houston apartment.
She is charged with abandoning a child with the intention of returning home.
Deputies with the Harris County Constable’s Office were called to the scene Tuesday to conduct a welfare check. Witnesses said neighbors in the complex were concerned for the safety of two children who were left alone in one of the apartments. Witnesses said other residents saw William leave with her bags and belongings, but did not see her return.
“The apartment was in complete disarray, with trash and leftover food strewn throughout the room,” the document said. There was also a “very strong smell of urine.”
“No adults were present to supervise the boys, and no one appears to have been present since the defendant left the country,” the document continued. Police also had a camera in the apartment where Williams was watching and talking to her children during her trips, as well as a cell phone that Williams’ son used to send emails to her. I also discovered that.
The documents do not specify which cruise line Williams boarded or where he went. “Deputies attempted to contact the defendant to attend the scene, but the defendant was not cooperating and changed his story about his whereabouts,” the document states.
The Houston Fire Department was called to ensure the children were “in good health and not malnourished,” and the children were released to their aunt after Child Protective Services was called to the scene.
An attorney for Mr. Williams is not listed.
