Confused about the Temu ad that ran during this year’s Super Bowl? You’re not alone.

Searches for e-commerce company Temu (including the phrase “What is Temu”) spiked after the company aired five commercials during and immediately after the game. Each commercial featured colorful animated characters purchasing products for just 99 cents. Upbeat songs played in the background as the characters danced on screen, promising viewers the chance to “shop like a millionaire.”

“This commercial highlights the Super Bowl campaign, which featured more than $15 million in coupons and giveaways,” Tem said in a statement quoted by CNN.

A quick search of the platform’s website will reveal some amazing deals. $8 sneakers. Airpod lookalike for $18. $4 Stanley Cup Camo.

But are the site’s low prices worth it? Here’s what you need to know about Temu.

This photo illustration shows the Temu app on the App Store in a Temu consumer video on February 23, 2023 in Washington, DC.

What is Tem?

Temu is an online discount marketplace offering everything from T-shirts to garden hoses. What do all our products have in common? Low price. The company says it reduces costs because the products are shipped directly from suppliers and manufacturers.

Temu launched in the U.S. in September 2022 and had more than 50 million monthly active users in the U.S. as of January, according to market intelligence firm Sensor Tower. This is an increase of nearly 300% year over year.

The company operates similarly to other e-commerce companies such as Amazon, but shoppers can expect longer shipping times as products are often shipped from China and other parts of the world. .

Despite long shipping times and reportedly questionable quality for some products (Temu’s Better Business Bureau rating is 2.5 out of 5 stars), Temu’s apps are popular worldwide and in the U.S. One of the most downloaded apps in the world.

According to a note from Sensor Tower, “Temu completely captivated consumers throughout the last year.”

The company said Temu “dominates consumer attention” compared to its competitors, driven by a “flashy” user interface and in-app games that promote discounts. According to Sensor Tower, Temu users spent an average of 23 minutes a week on the app in the fourth quarter, compared to 18 minutes on Amazon and 22 minutes on eBay.

“We believe Temu’s value positioning, app gamification, increased advertising spend, vast inventory, and close relationships with suppliers are driving the company’s growth,” Sensor Tower’s memo said. It is written as “There is.”

Temu was founded in 2022 in Boston, Massachusetts. Its parent company is PDD Holdings Inc. (formerly Pinduoduo Inc.), headquartered in Shanghai.

PDD stock rose 3.2% on Monday to close at $131.57.

Is Temu safe to buy?

PDD Holdings is a Chinese e-commerce company, Pinduoduo, which has been accused of using code to bypass mobile phone security settings to spy on other apps, read private messages, and change settings. (Pinduoduo) is also owned.

PDD rejected claims that the app contained malicious code.

  • Contact information, such as email address and phone number.
  • Purchase history and search history.
  • Location data and IP addresses.
  • Social media profiles (if provided by the user).
  • Data from third party sources.

A class action lawsuit was filed last year accusing Temu of “malicious” collection of personal data and violating customers’ privacy rights, and cybersecurity experts have warned that using the app comes with risks. There is.

In an emailed statement, Tem said the company collects information to provide and enhance its products and services and is subject to “extensive” regulation as part of the $170 billion Nasdaq-listed company. He pointed out that he was being monitored.

“At Temu, we prioritize protecting your privacy and being transparent about our data practices,” the statement said.

Does Tem use forced labor?

According to a 2023 report by Ultra Information Solutions, a global supply chain verification company, Tem is accused of evading a U.S. ban on products manufactured in China’s western Xinjiang province.

The United States has banned imports of products from Xinjiang, citing mistreatment of the Muslim-majority Uyghur people in the region.

Mr Tem said the allegations were “totally baseless”.

“Our current standards and practices are no different than those of major U.S. e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, eBay, and Etsy,” the company said in an emailed statement.
