The quake was the strongest to hit the island in 25 years, according to AFP news agency, and authorities warned of more tremors to come. Taiwanese authorities said the quake was the strongest since a magnitude 7.6 quake that hit the country in 1999, killing 2,400 people.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed sadness over the loss of life in the Taiwan earthquake and expressed solidarity with India’s “resilient” people.
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of life in the earthquake that occurred in Taiwan today. I would like to express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
