The Indian team will be playing in their second World Cup final in eight months when they take on South Africa in the summit showdown of the T20 mega event in Barbados on Saturday. Despite going into the summit showdown unbeaten, India lost to Australia in the 2023 Cricket World Cup final on November 19. Now, the Indian team will get another chance to end their long drought of winning an ICC title when they face the Proteas in the 2024 T20 World Cup final.
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly hilariously suggested that Rohit might jump into the sea in Barbados if India loses the upcoming final too.
“He has played two World Cup finals and reached both the finals unbeaten. That speaks volumes about his captaincy and leadership and it is not a surprise as he became the captain when I was the BCCI president and when Virat retired as India captain,” Ganguly was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
“It took a long time to make him captain as he was not ready for the role. It took a strong push from all of us to make him captain. It is very good to see Indian cricket progressing under him,” Ganguly said, adding that winning an IPL title can be tougher at times due to the long duration of the tournament.
“Rohit has the record of winning the IPL five times and that is a big achievement. Winning the IPL is sometimes much harder. Don’t misunderstand my words, I am not saying that the IPL is better than international cricket.”
“But to win the IPL you have to win 16-17 (12-13) matches. To win the World Cup you have to win eight-nine matches. It is more of an honour to win the World Cup and I hope Rohit wins it tomorrow.”
“I don’t think it’s possible for him to lose two World Cup finals in seven months. If he loses two finals as captain in seven months, he’ll probably jump in the waters of Barbados. He’s been at the forefront, leading the team and batting brilliantly. Hopefully that continues tomorrow. Hopefully India finish the game in the right position and play with freedom.”
“They are the best team in the tournament. I wish them all the best and hope they win. Hopefully they get a little bit of luck tomorrow because you need that to win big tournaments,” Ganguly added.
