Super Tuesday results: Trump closer to Republican presidential nomination

Donald Trump won big primaries in at least a dozen states on Tuesday, moving closer to securing the Republican presidential nomination and entering a full-fledged rematch with President Biden.

President Trump leads his last Republican rival, Nikki Haley, by wide margins in most of the 15 states that held primaries and caucuses on Super Tuesday, and The Associated Press reports news from the Deep South. Even England are predicted to win. He won delegate-rich Texas and California, held a strong lead in moderate Massachusetts, and won Oklahoma by well over 60 points, with nearly all votes counted Tuesday night. .

But Haley, a former U.N. ambassador, won a surprise victory in Vermont in a bid to prove that many voters still want an alternative to Trump. With more than 80% of the vote counted, she was leading Trump by several points. Barring something unforeseen, her path to the Republican nomination is effectively closed, so Haley and her staff will privately watch the results of her election, without saying what she will do next. There wasn’t. A campaign spokesperson said in a statement late Tuesday night that many Republican primary voters remain “expressing deep concerns about Donald Trump” and that addressing those concerns “will make the Republican Party and America more It will get better.”

President Trump entered the Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida, to cheers on Tuesday night, saying “thank you” and giving a fist pump. “I’ve never been so decisive,” he told the crowd.

His supporters responded: “We love you.”

The team predicts that more than a third of the delegates who will ultimately vote for the Republican candidate will participate on Super Tuesday, putting President Trump on track to win a majority of delegates by March 19 at the latest. Riding.

On the Democratic side, Biden was quickly expected to win decisively in nearly every race on Tuesday, but lost the territory of American Samoa, which had supported a little-known entrepreneur. . Hi.

Although the results have limitations, they do provide some insight into each party’s feelings about the candidate candidates. Haley pointed to Trump’s own vote share as evidence that Trump actually has work to do to win the popular support he needs in the general election. But recent polls show that Republicans seem more enthusiastic about Trump than Democrats, even though Biden faces no stiff competition in the primaries.

The vote moves the country closer to the formal start of the contentious Trump-Biden rematch that has been underway virtually for much of this year. As the election race heats up, Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden are increasingly seeing each other pass each other. The two sides recently held dueling events near the southern border in Texas, and are expected to clash again on Saturday in the battleground state of Georgia, which will hold its March 12 primary.

“Tonight’s results force Americans to make a clear choice: Will we continue to move forward, or will we allow Donald Trump to drag us into the chaos, division, and darkness that has defined his presidency?” Biden said in a statement Tuesday night.

Both Trump and Biden were expected to win Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. Biden also won the Democratic primaries in Vermont and Utah. In American Samoa, where only the Democratic caucus was held on Tuesday, entrepreneur Jason Palmer pulled off the upset.

Trump’s victory has heightened questions about Haley’s future path. Haley has vowed to remain in the race until Super Tuesday, arguing that voters past the first few races deserve to be considered. But she has not disclosed her plans beyond that, nor did she announce plans to address the nation on Tuesday. night.

He indicated he would no longer be bound by the pledge of support for Republican candidates that the Republican National Committee required of all debate participants last year.

“Everyone says if you don’t support Donald Trump, you’re a Democrat,” Haley said Tuesday on Fox News when asked about the pledge. “It’s terrible and it’s not unifying.” Asked if she supported it, she said, noting that Trump never signed the RNC pledge and skipped the debate, “I don’t think it’s true today. It’s not a decision you have to make.”

Ms. Haley’s allies have cast her as the embodiment of a broader battle within the Republican Party, a leader of the persistent resistance to changes in the party under the Trump administration. Haley, who has garnered her support from more traditional conservatives, independents and even some Democrats, has doubled down on her criticism of Trump and discouraged those who would join the Republican tent. He claimed that Trump was keeping him away.

Haley’s best showing on Tuesday was in Vermont. New Hampshire’s neighboring state, Vermont, was the state where Ms. Haley campaigned most intensely in the early primaries, where she garnered significant support from independent voters, winning 43% of the vote in January.

Analysts say Vermont has favored moderate Republicans in the past and the Republican primary is open to non-Republicans, characteristics that also help Ms. Haley in New Hampshire. .

But Super Tuesday largely showed how thoroughly Trump has won the debate within his party, rebounding from the political weakness he experienced at the start of his re-election campaign in the fall of 2022. Republicans rallied to Trump’s side as he racked up 91 felonies and is now nearly ready to do so. They rallied behind Trump, encouraged by polls showing him to be highly competitive with Biden, often with a lead.

President Trump is outraged by Haley’s decision to remain in the race, but told Fox News on Tuesday that he wishes her well, “even though there is no path forward for her.” Later at Mar-a-Lago, Trump predicted the Republican Party would soon be “united.”

The focus of the general election is already clear, with Mr. Biden seeking to overcome low approval ratings and widespread concerns about his age, while Mr. Trump faces allegations of criminal activity and many centrist voters who could decide a close race. faces deep disapproval from Both candidates hope to profit from the other’s unpopularity and will likely fight hard on behalf of those dissatisfied with their options.

Democrats seek to remind voters of President Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election and their pivotal role in ending the national right to abortion, while Republicans and harshly criticizes Mr. Biden’s response to the economy. Exit polls in both North Carolina and Virginia found that about 4 in 10 Republican primary voters said immigration was the biggest issue when deciding who to support, followed by about a third who said the economy was the biggest issue. I answered.

Exit polls also showed clear differences in beliefs between Trump and Haley supporters about the 2020 election. In Virginia, for example, 95% of people who believed Biden won illegally voted for Trump.

Tracking the number of GOP delegates

California and Texas attracted the most delegates on Tuesday, with more than 160 each. Trump needs 1,215 delegates, a simple majority, to secure the nomination. The other voting states were Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, and Virginia.

Tuesday’s most competitive race unfolded in the polls.

In California, two candidates with the most primary votes regardless of party will advance in November, but in the Senate, Representative Katie Porter (Democratic) is competing against Representative Adam Schiff (Democratic) to replace the late Dianne Feinstein. There was a fierce battle. Mr. Schiff ran ads to raise the profile of his Republican opponent, former baseball player Steve Garvey, who defeated Mr. Porter in the primary and will face a man who has virtually no chance of winning the deep blue state in November. I aimed to do that.

Notable U.S. House races include the battle for California’s 22nd Congressional District, a Central Valley region that Biden won by 13 points in 2020. Rep. David G. Valadao (R) has become a top target for Democrats seeking to regain control of the House, while Democratic challengers Rudy Salas and Melissa Hurtado are Splitting the vote, Mr. Valadao was in danger of advancing to the general seat along with another Republican.

In California’s close races, results may not be known for days or weeks because of the slow voting process in the state, which relies heavily on mail-in voting.

Meanwhile, Colorado has a crowded primary after Rep. Lauren Boebert (R), one of the most vocal members of the far right in the House, redistricted to run for a more Republican-leaning seat. was participating in. In Alabama’s 1st Congressional District, Republicans Barry Moore and Jerry L. Kahl faced off after a federal court ruling led to redistricting. And the national Republican Party expected retired Army Colonel Laurie Buckhout to defeat Sandy Smith in November’s Republican primary for North Carolina’s 1st Congressional District, a hotly contested race. The Congressional Leadership Fund, a super PAC supporting Republican efforts to hold onto the House, ran ads backing Buckhout.

North Carolina voters also chose candidates in this year’s most competitive gubernatorial race. Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson (R) faces Democratic nominee and likely state Attorney General Josh Stein, despite strong claims from Republican rivals about Robinson’s responsibility in the general election. was expected to move forward.

In Texas, Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas), State Sen. Rolando Gutierrez (D-Texas) and several other candidates are competing against Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who is expected to retain his seat. ) was competing for the Democratic nomination. in November.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) also called for the removal of Republican state legislators who blocked enactment of a voucher program that would allow parents to use public funds to send their children to private schools. And Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) targeted fellow conservatives, including House Speaker Dade Phelan, who voted to impeach Paxton on corruption charges last year (Paxton was ultimately acquitted). Ta).

According to estimates by the Associated Press, Biden could win the Democratic presidential nomination as early as March 19. Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) and self-help author Marianne Williamson are still running against him, but they pose no serious electoral threat.

Democrats are becoming increasingly nervous about a coordinated effort to vote “irresponsible” in the primary to protest the Biden administration’s handling of the Israel-Gaza war. In Michigan, a battleground state with the largest concentration of Arab Americans in the country, more than 100,000 people, or 13% of participants in the Democratic primary, voted “no vote,” sparking debate over its impact on the general election. Happened.

Activists were pushing for similar protest votes in Super Tuesday states such as Minnesota, which also has a large Arab-American electorate. But these efforts have received far less attention than in Michigan, where any disruption to the Democratic coalition could jeopardize the state’s path to victory in November. As of Tuesday night, about 15% of early voting had been counted in Minnesota, with about one-fifth of the votes counted.
