Sunbird is back to bring iMessage to Android after the company shut down the service due to security concerns.

The last time it was available, the company partnered with Nothing on a service known as “Nothing Chats.” This service was another of his iMessage services for Android that promised blue bubbles but faced serious security issues.

The company is committed to soon making this experience available for everyone to enjoy.

According to the latest press release, it will start with a beta version that anyone can try, and it already has several fixes, enhancements, and improvements compared to the initial version.

From the previous AV1 iMessage architecture, the company developed AV2, a new and better take on this implementation. We are currently focused on improving user privacy and use the MQTTS message broker, the OASIS standard for secure messaging.

Sunbird promises that decrypted messages will only exist in memory for a short time as they are passed to iMessage and the RCS/Google messaging network.

Sunbird shutdown and security issues

In 2022, Sunbird was the first to offer iMessage for Android, promising to bring this experience to everyone. They then partnered with Nothing Chats to provide the same experience for their apps.

However, we found a number of security issues, including privacy issues where messages are stored in a Firebase database, unencrypted HTTP API calls, and more.

Now, the company is looking to fix all of this, make it more secure, and roll it out gradually to users who sign up (the waiting list is still open for users who want to join via this link). Sunbird will send you an invitation. To what is accepted.

iMessage for Android interconnect

Last year’s wave of companies considering iMessage services for Android came amid a lively conversation surrounding Apple’s reluctance to adopt RCS.

The first of many companies to do this was Sunbird, followed by Nothing Chats in partnership with them. Initially, it was exclusive to Nothing Phone (2) and required an Apple ID login.

Later, Beeper introduced the Beeper Mini app, which provides iMessage service for Android, and the service followed widely used all over the world.

But this experience hit a major snag along the way. For one, customers were finding it difficult to connect to the service as the status would turn off and on until Apple shut down the service and ceased operations.

Sunbird and Beeper are two companies that tried to bring iMessage interoperability to Android, and while their intentions were good, they encountered some hiccups along the way.

Well, Sunbird is back for round two. This follows Apple’s decision to adopt RCS, which will soon bring iMessage to Android. This time, Sunbird plans to expand slowly.
