Showers and thunderstorms will continue across much of the Great Lakes and Northeast on Friday, before a deadly storm is expected to make landfall in Canada.
The storm caused widespread damage across much of the United States, causing power outages and spawning more than a dozen tornadoes throughout the week.
Flood advisories were in effect Friday for the entire Atlantic Coast from North Carolina to Maine and from West Virginia to parts of New York state, the National Weather Service said. High wind warnings were issued for much of Ohio, Michigan and Kentucky.
More than 50,000 homes and businesses from Virginia to New York are without power, according to a USA TODAY database. The severe weather advisory was scheduled to be lifted from late morning into the afternoon as the storm continues northward before the cold front spreads.
This week’s storm system tore through the Gulf Coast, Southeast and Midwest over several days, downing trees, destroying homes, flooding rural areas and city streets, and causing multiple deaths and injuries.
More than 10 inches of rain was recorded in parts of northern Florida, Texas and Louisiana this week, causing severe flash flooding. Several inches of rain fell across the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest states, including Illinois, Ohio, Virginia and New York.
At least 14 tornadoes were recorded across the Gulf Coast from Texas to Florida. In Mississippi, 179 homes were damaged, six people were injured and two women died due to the severe weather, according to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.
Scott County Coroner Hunter Wolfe told the Mississippi Clarion Ledger, part of the USA TODAY Network, that power was out north of Harperville, about 80 miles east of Jackson, and that Shirley Wilson (64 years old) died. Wilson had a list of health complications and was on oxygen, but his oxygen supply was cut off when Wilson lost power. Wolf said there was no back-up supply of oxygen. Wolf said authorities tried to transport Wilson to a hospital, but storm debris blocked the road.
Shanika Newton, 43, of LeFlore County, died after her car hydroplaned into a flooded ditch and drowned in LeFlore County, LeFlore County Deputy Coroner Will Gunemi said.
