ATLANTA, Feb. 21, 2024 (Globe Newswire) — Today, Spelman College, in collaboration with Morehouse College, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Clark Atlanta University, is awarded a $14 million competitive grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). I won a grant. This is part of the Nationally Transformative Greater Research Access for Equity and Diversity (GRANTED) initiative.
NSF announced it will invest $20 million in eight institutions through the GRANTED initiative to transform access to research support. NSF GRANTED is intended to address systemic barriers within the nation’s research enterprise. Many of the initiatives funded by NSF GRANTED to date have had a transformative impact, particularly on emerging research institutions and institutions serving minorities.
“This $20 million investment through NSF’s GRANTED initiative reflects our commitment to breaking down barriers in access to research. By strategically supporting collaborations like the University of Atlanta Center, We are working to build a transformative hub and set the standard for equity and diversity in the nation’s research landscape,” said NSF Director Sethuraman Panchanathan. “These projects underscore our dedication to empowering institutions, promoting inclusivity, and propelling the entire research ecosystem to greater heights.”
AUC-GRANTED: A collaborative approach to transforming the research enterprise through a shared support model for collective impact and synergy Synergistically expand research support and service capabilities within and across Atlanta University Centers (AUC) through activities and shared resources designed to reduce competitiveness barriers and strengthen the research enterprise within AUC. We aim to do so.
The joint AUC-GRANTED project is designed to: (1) Strengthen knowledge management and information exchange. research leadership at AUC, other HBCUs, and regional institutions. (2) Strengthening Research and Development Ability to support idea generation and competitive proposal development. (3) Strengthen research management AUC Institutional Infrastructure. (4) create and implement an AUC-wide office for research and technology commercialization; The overarching goal of this proposal is to establish a hub that promotes equity in the nation’s research ecosystem and serves as a model for other HBCUs and emerging research institutions (ERIs). Unlike traditional funding for scientific research and education, GRANTED focuses on strengthening institutions and the national research enterprise.

It provides opportunities to advance knowledge and thought leadership and foster innovation and entrepreneurship. It also allows the AUC institutions that work with Spelman College to enhance their role in growing the state’s economy,” said Spelman College President Helen Gale.
