Corning Paint Post senior Graham Simmons called 5356 Team TARDIS’ winning the Overall Inspire Award at the Excelsior Regional Championship in March the culmination of the entire season.
The win at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica set the stage for more success and more travel.
5356 Team TARDIS, a 14-person team comprised of C-PP, Horseheads, and homeschool students, will be participating in the FIRST World Championship in Houston, Texas from April 17th to 20th.
Simmons said Team TARDIS 5356, sponsored by Corning, will be one of 224 teams around the world to compete in the inaugural World Championship.
“It’s going to be a very unique opportunity to compete against teams from all over the state and internationally,” Simmons said. “I would say 60 to 70 percent of the teams are from the United States, but we also have a lot of international teams participating.”
A team from Ballston Spa (6955 RoBovines) and a team from Mamaroneck (14903 Sharkbots) will also represent upstate New York at the first World Championship, said TARDIS team coach Michael Symons. In this event he will be joined by teams from more than 20 countries.
“I’ve been on the team for four years,” said Michael McNaughton, a senior at C-PP. “This year was a special year for us, especially for me as a senior. I’m very happy to be at the World Championships. We’ve been working on this for four years. I’m very excited. It took a lot of hard work, so I’m really happy that it paid off.”
Tristan Lint, a third-year student at C-PP, said this year has been a great year for him because he feels the team is more focused on organization and getting things done more efficiently compared to freshmen and sophomores. He said it was.
“We did a lot more planning and thought before we started anything,” Lindt says. “I am happy to be competing at the World Championships in Houston, Texas.”
Rindt said he would also like to thank all of the team’s sponsors.
“We raised a lot of money. The community supported us a lot,” Lint said. “We’re always volunteering and helping the community, and they kind of returned the favor. We raised $16,000 for the trip.”
“Road to Texas” included several other competitions
Simmons said Team 5356 TARDIS began its season in December 2023, beating 18 other teams in Manchester, New York, to win the Inspire Award in the qualifying robotics competition.
The TARDIS also competed in two other qualifiers and later hosted a qualifier event in the C-PP High School gymnasium.
On March 3, the TARDIS participated in a regional robotics competition. Participating teams included teams from all over New York State except New York City and Long Island.
“We competed against teams from all over the state and did well in the robot competition as well as the judging,” Simmons said. “We worked well together and were able to win the Overall Inspire Award in the end. We worked a lot for this.”
About the robot competition
Qualifying matches last 2 minutes. During the first 30 seconds, the robot is all pre-programmed, and during the last minute and a half, the driver controls the robot.
“We have a video game controller that we use to move the robot,” Simmons said. “There are four teams in this field with two alliances. You will be paired with that team and then you will play against another team that you are trying to defeat.”
Simmons said there are various awards teams can earn throughout the season.
“Throughout the season, we’re dealing with more than just robots,” Simon said. “We’re also working on collaborative activities with elementary schools. That’s one of our big programs.”
Simmons said Team 5356 TARDIS visited all Corning Paint Post elementary schools and all-school assemblies, where students had the opportunity to experience robot design activities that shared STEM learning.
“We will be recognized for both the innovation of the robot and the control system,” Simmons says. “Although this is robot-centric, half of the competition is also about your outreach and how you’ve reached out to students in the community. You’re bringing new people into the program.”
New members join through interaction with students
Simmons said Team TARDIS 5356 held an outreach event at Wings of Eagles in September that included Evan Chin, a ninth-grader from the Corning Pained Post School District who later joined the team. .
“She has been incredibly helpful ever since,” Simon said.
Chin said she is interested in robotics, programming and advocacy.
“Our team is very cooperative,” Qin said. “I’m always learning new things from my seniors. They taught me a lot.”

Harpursville Robotics team competes in VEX Robotics World Championship
