The iPhone 14 is basically the same as the iPhone 13, with no design updates other than new colors. It features the same flat-sided design with angular edges that Apple used for last year’s iPhones.
Apple’s iPhone 14 measures 6.1 inches, while the larger screen iPhone 14 Plus measures 6.7 inches, the same size as the iPhone 14 Pro Max.
iPhone 14 models feature an all-glass front and a colorful glass back framed by a color-matched aerospace-grade aluminum frame. The notch at the top of the display contains the TrueDepth camera, speaker, and microphone, and Apple has left the notch around for more affordable devices. The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max have ditched the notch and replaced it with a “dynamic island.”
There are a series of antenna bands on the top and sides of the phone, a power button on the right side, and a volume button and mute switch on the left side. There is a 5G mmWave antenna under the power button, but this is limited to iPhone 14 models sold in the US.
The bottom of the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus has a speaker hole and a microphone, as well as a Lightning port for charging. Apple has discontinued SIM slots in the US due to the transition to eSIM.
The camera bump on the back of the iPhone remains unchanged, with a diagonal lens setup, True Tone flash, and microphone.
The iPhone 14 measures 5.78 inches (146.7 mm) high, 2.82 inches (71.5 mm) wide, and 0.31 inches (7.80 mm) deep, which is the same as the iPhone 13 except for the thickness. It’s 0.15mm thick, but most people won’t notice it. The iPhone 14 weighs 6.07 ounces (172 grams), so it’s slightly lighter than the iPhone 13.
iPhone 14 Plus measures 6.33 inches (160.8mm) high, 3.07 inches (78.1mm) wide, and 0.31 inches (7.80mm) thick. Weight is 7.16 ounces (203 grams).
No iPhone 14 mini
Last year, Apple sold the 5.4-inch iPhone 13 mini along with the 6.1-inch iPhone 13, but there is no 5.4-inch iPhone this year. Analysts predict that poor sales of the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini will lead to Apple discontinuing sales of those sizes.
Apple currently offers iPhones in 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch sizes, the same sizes available for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. This is the first time Apple is offering a larger version of the standard iPhone, as for the past few years the 6.7-inch size has been limited to the “Pro” version of the iPhone.
color
Apple has offered its standard iPhone lineup in a variety of bright colors for the past few years. iPhone 14 models are available in Blue, Purple, Midnight, Starlight, (PRODUCT)RED, and Yellow.
Yellow was announced in March 2023 and is a new addition to the color lineup. Apple often releases new iPhone shades in the spring, and this year yellow was the spring color option. Yellow is available for iPhone 14 and 14 Plus.
Waterproof/dustproof
iPhone 14 and 14 Plus have an IP68 rating for resistance to water and dust ingress. The smartphone can withstand depths of up to 6 meters (19.7 feet) for up to 30 minutes.
The 6 in the IP68 number stands for dust resistance (meaning the iPhone 14 can withstand dirt, dust, and other particulates), and the 8 stands for water resistance. IP6x is the highest rating for dust resistance in existence. The IP68 rating allows iPhone 14 to withstand splashes, rain, and accidental water exposure, but avoid intentional water exposure.
According to Apple, water and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and can degrade over time with normal use. Apple’s standard warranty does not cover liquid damage, so be careful if you come into contact with liquid.
