SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — The San Jose Sharks added some much-needed forward depth on Wednesday, acquiring Barclay Goodrow on waivers from the New York Rangers and Ty Dellandrea in a trade from Dallas to supplement future young player movements.
General manager Mike Grier had been looking to add a veteran forward to ease the transition to the NHL for projected first overall pick in this year’s draft, Macklin Celebrini, and Will Smith, last year’s fourth overall pick who recently signed an entry-level contract with San Jose.
The Sharks sent a 2025 fourth-round pick they originally acquired from Winnipeg to acquire Dellandrea and were also willing to accept Goodloe’s contract from the Rangers, who placed him on waivers on Tuesday.
Goodrow, 31, has been a valuable backup center in long playoff runs since scoring an overtime goal in Game 7 of a first-round series against Las Vegas in 2019 when San Jose reached the Western Conference finals, and also played a key role on Tampa Bay’s teams that won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021, helping New York reach the Eastern Conference finals in 2022 and this season’s playoffs before losing to Florida.
Since making his league debut in 2014, the Toronto native has accumulated 169 points in 572 regular season games and another 24 points in 97 playoff games.
Acquiring Goodrow will save the Rangers, who are trying to rebuild their team after narrowly missing out on a spot in the Stanley Cup Final, $3.6 million against the salary cap over the next three seasons.
Dellandrea, 23, has played in 42 games for Dallas this season, recording two goals and seven assists. He ranks sixth among team forwards with 63 hits and played the fifth-most minutes on the penalty kill among Stars forwards.
He scored one goal in Dallas’ six playoff games this season.
Dellandrea was the 13th overall pick by the Stars in 2018 but never really had any big offensive numbers with Dallas, appearing in 151 NHL games with 14 goals and 28 assists, as well as four goals in 24 playoff games.
Dellandrea is set to become a restricted free agent in July, but the Sharks retain his arbitration rights.
This article has been corrected. An earlier version incorrectly reported that Goodloe had two years remaining on his contract.
