Alabama Sen. Katie Britt, who appeared to sympathize with the Republican response to the State of the Union as an example of President Joe Biden’s immigration failures, told CNN that the woman was trafficked before Biden took office, telling lawmakers said there was a lack of empathy in exploiting the issue. CNN’s Freedom Project, which aims to raise awareness about modern-day slavery, previously featured Jacinto’s story.
Jacinto told CNN that Mexican politicians used her story to exploit and exploit her for political purposes, and the same thing happened again in the United States.
“I work as an advocate for the many victims who don’t have a voice, and I really want them to have empathy.I want every governor, every senator to empathize with the issue of human trafficking. I want her to have that, because there are millions of girls and boys who are victims, forever gone. People like her who are actually trafficked and abused. [Britt] mentioned.and i think she is [Britt] “Before we tell a story of such magnitude, we should first consider what is actually happening,” Jacinto said.
In the Republican response to Biden’s State of the Union address on Thursday, Britt said: I traveled to the Del Rio area of Texas and spoke to a woman there who told me her story. “She was sex trafficked by a cartel since she was 12 years old,” he said, before adding, “President Biden’s border crisis is shameful. It’s despicable. And it’s almost entirely preventable.”
Jacinto said he met the senator at an event with other government officials and anti-trafficking activists at the southern border, rather than one-on-one as Britt said. She also stated that she has never been trafficked in the United States, as Britt suggested. She said she was not trafficked by Mexican drug cartels, but by pimps who act as family members who trap vulnerable girls and force them into prostitution.
Jacinto said he was incarcerated from 2004 to 2008, when George W. Bush was president and Biden was a senator.
CNN has reached out to the senator’s office for comment on Sunday.
Sean Ross, Mr. Britt’s communications director, told the Washington Post that the senator was talking about Jacinto and disputed that Mr. Britt’s language was misleading.
Asked by Fox News’ Shannon Bream on Sunday if she intended the story to give the impression that it happened during Biden’s time in office, Britt said, before criticizing the president’s border policies. No, Shannon.”
“I made it very clear that I spoke to a woman who told me about the time she was trafficked when she was 12 years old. “She was trafficked when she was 12 years old,” Britt said.
In a preliminary statement to CNN, a spokesperson for Britt’s office would not confirm or deny that Britt shared Jacinto’s account, but said the story the senator told him was “100% accurate. That’s correct.”
