WBIR spoke to the Sevier teacher about the importance of STEM after winning the Computer Science Award.
SEVIER COUNTY, Tenn. — Shelby Woods teaches computer science in Sevier County. She received one of her two Tennessee STEM Innovation Network Awards for Excellence in Computer Science.
“Computer science is becoming more widely known. You see the technology being used in every industry,” Woods said.
She teaches 7th and 8th grade computer science at Sevier County Middle School. As technology has advanced over the years, computer science classes have followed suit.
“I grew up with technology, and in the short 25 years I’ve been alive, I’ve seen it expand far and wide. Technology is spreading rapidly, and my job as an educator is… It’s about teaching students how to use technology safely and helping them grow in technology,” she said.
In Shelby’s class, students learn how to code and the science behind coding. They also learn about social media, something past generations were not taught. Social media has grown over the past few decades.
And now, middle school students are learning how to create content for different platforms.
“Social media can have an amazing impact. As social media grows, we wanted to teach our students how to do it safely,” she said.
Students will post on the school’s Instagram and Facebook accounts. We will also create a page for your school’s yearbook. All these skills will help her students when they enter the workforce years later.
“The most important thing I can teach my students is how to use it in their work and how to connect it to what they’re going to do,” she said.
