The massive storm continued to batter parts of the eastern United States on Tuesday and moved across the country, destroying homes, toppling trees and causing widespread power outages.
About 78 million people were under severe weather advisories from the National Weather Service, warning of flash flooding, long-track tornadoes and hail the size of baseballs. Meteorologists said the Ohio and Tennessee valleys face the highest risk, especially in the afternoon and evening. The weather service added that severe storms are possible as far south as the Gulf Coast and as far east as western Virginia and the Carolinas.
More than 300,000 of the utility’s customers in states including West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio were without power as of Tuesday afternoon as winds as high as 92 mph battered the region, according to a database maintained by USA TODAY.
Several possible tornadoes leveled buildings, uprooted trees and canceled public voting in large swaths of the Midwest late Monday and Tuesday. School districts canceled classes, delayed school starts, and sent students home early.
Meanwhile, communities in Oklahoma, Missouri, Indiana, Illinois and other states have begun investigating the wreckage, while others continue to face dire conditions. In addition to Midwestern cities, cities such as Nashville, Birmingham, and Atlanta have been affected by the storm. Several accidents were also reported, including one where two commercial vehicles overturned on an Indiana highway, injuring several people.
The massive system fueled storms that have affected coast to coast since last weekend, dumping damaging hail across the Midwest and causing heavy rains to partially collapse major highways in Southern California.

Report of damage in Evansville, Indiana
Shortly after waking up early Tuesday morning, Irene Helmen heard sirens in the distance. As she listened to the radio on her nightstand, a tornado warning was immediately issued and she took shelter in the guest bathroom, where she huddled for about 30 minutes.
As the rain began to ease around 7:30 a.m., Hermen, 70, decided to head to the church in Evansville, Indiana, where she works as a receptionist. As she drove, she saw tree branches, outdoor furniture and other debris strewn across city streets. Some streetlights were turned off, including at busy intersections.
“We were saved,” Hermen said of Christian Fellowship Church and the surrounding area. “But there were also some terrible moments…”

There were no immediate reports of injuries in Vanderburgh County, which includes Evansville, said Sheriff Noah Robinson, who spoke to the Courier and Press, part of the USA TODAY Network. Sheriff’s officials said they are still conducting search operations in the affected areas.
As of mid-morning, CenterPoint Energy reported more than 22,000 customers in southwest Indiana were without power due to storm damage. Kenergy, a power company in western Kentucky, also reported hundreds of power outages.
Citing “extreme damage,” the Evansville War Museum announced it would cancel all events and issue refunds to ticket buyers. Photos posted on the museum’s Facebook page show ceiling tiles caved in, exposing insulation.
“It’s been a little rough here in the county, but we’re also experiencing power outages in the city,” Robinson said. “We’re dealing with dozens of downed trees and, in some cases, power lines.”
Thunderstorms expected to hit the Northeast and Southeast
A large storm system is expected to bring showers and severe thunderstorms to parts of the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast throughout this week, meteorologists said.
The National Weather Service announced a slight risk of severe thunderstorms Wednesday and Thursday, warning of frequent lightning strikes, high winds, hail and “several tornadoes” in both areas.
Major storm conditions in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic are expected to subside by Friday, the weather service said.
Multiple people injured in massive car crash in Texas
More than 30 vehicles were involved in a massive car crash in central and central Texas on Monday afternoon as a major storm moved east across the country, multiple media reported.
Multiple people were injured in the crash on State Route 349 just before 5 p.m., West News 9 reported, citing the Texas Department of Public Safety, which did not immediately respond to USA Today’s request for comment.
At the time of the crash, local authorities warned of dangerous travel conditions due to dust and strong winds from the massive storm.
Heavy snow forecast for Midwest and Northeast
Heavy snow is expected across much of northern Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan on Tuesday, the weather service said.
At least 4 to 8 inches of snow is possible in these areas, with heavy snow most likely from eastern Wisconsin to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The same storm is expected to bring snow across the Northeast Wednesday through Friday, the weather service said.
Significant amounts of snow are possible in upstate New York and northern New England. Strong winds are likely to disrupt travel due to poor visibility and slippery roads. Heavy snow and strong wind gusts could damage trees and impact infrastructure, the Bureau of Meteorology said.
