CEBU CITY, Philippines – A group of local seniors has urged their fellow seniors to adopt an “active lifestyle” to lead healthier and happier lives.
An active lifestyle includes regular exercise, social interaction and mental stimulation, all of which contribute to overall health and prevent problems associated with aging.
The Open Organization for Effective Reforms for Older Adults (SCOOTER) proposed initiatives to prevent age-related complications and maintain the physical and mental health of its members.
Scooter is a private organization made up of Cebuano seniors that serves as the senior citizens federation of Cebu City and strives to better represent the senior citizen community.
The organization was founded in 2011 and has grown to have over 400 members from 22 barangays in Cebu City. It experienced a hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic but successfully returned in 2023.

Scooter vice president Norma Ragno said in an interview on the television and radio program “Sungkod ni Lolo ug Lola” that the organisation continually launches programmes it believes will be beneficial for the elderly.
Llagno explained that these programs promote the health and wellness of their senior peers.
“I have put together a plan of action. One of our goals is to promote health and wellness and mental assistance programs for our members to prevent dementia among the elderly,” she said.
Llano reiterated the need for older people to continue to lead active lives after retirement, rather than staying confined to their homes.
“Retirement is not the end of the road for us, it’s the beginning of the journey ahead,” Ragno said.

Scooter hosts free clinics and consultations for members each month, the most recent one was held on June 9th.
The initiative will provide free medical consultations, discounted medicines and affordable medical testing services.
Additionally, Liagno said the group organizes various socio-cultural activities for its members, including an annual Lenten retreat.
A workshop seminar focusing on the rights of older people will be held on June 29. The seminar is a collaboration between SCOOTER and another non-governmental organisation, she added.
Llagno stressed that these activities are designed to allow members to enjoy life as seniors and stay active, and she encourages all members to stay involved in activities even after retirement and not stay confined to their homes.
