Seequent, a Bentley Subsurface Company, has released Visible Geology, a free web application designed to teach geoscience students how the Earth works in 3D.

According to Sequent, Visible Geology delivers an immersive and intuitive gaming experience that will transform the way geoscience students are taught key concepts of geology, the foundational science that helps understand the Earth. The app was developed in collaboration with CerebralFix, a game development studio that creates innovative interactive digital experiences for companies such as Disney, Pixar and DreamWorks.

The app goes beyond traditional 2D and paper-based teaching methods to deliver immersive 3D modeling in the cloud through an intuitive interface. Anyone with internet access can access Visible Geology for free, with no subscription required.

Seequent CEO Graham Grant said: “At Seequent, we’re passionate about inspiring the next generation of geoscientists. We know how vital geoscientists are to understanding Earth’s resources and solving some of the world’s most urgent and complex challenges, from climate resilience to energy transition. Falling enrolments and the retirement of older professionals are creating a looming workforce crisis that will impact the way we live. That’s why we’ve leveraged our world-class expertise in geoscience software and brought in gaming experts CerebralFix to build Visible Geology and make it available to everyone for free.”

Universities around the world are reporting significant declines in geoscience enrolments and course cuts. Australia reported a 40% drop in geoscience students completing degrees over the past eight years, and in 2020 the UK reported a 43% drop in geology students since 2014 (a joint report by the Geological Society of London and the UK College of Geological Sciences). The American Geoscience Institute reports that there will be a workforce shortfall of 130,000 geologists in the US by 2030.

“Video games have the incredible power to transform education by combining immersive experiences with interactive learning,” said Chelsea Rapp, co-CEO of CerebralFix. “Video games are more than just entertainment; applications like Visible Geology are dynamic tools that allow learners to explore and experiment in ways that traditional methods can’t.”

Dr Kate Pedley, a lecturer in geology at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, has been involved in the Visible Geology testing process with her students and has already incorporated Visible Geology into her undergraduate courses. Dr Pedley said: “Visible Geology is intuitive and easy to use. Students can play around and have fun with it, and it helps them develop understanding in ways that complex 2D maps just can’t. Visible Geology provides a bridge to the specialist geoscience software that students will use in their careers.” |

According to the company, Visible Geology complements Seequent’s academic programs, an international network of students, educators and researchers who use Seequent’s specialized software at low or no cost at more than 500 top universities to advance understanding of the Earth.
