For the past five years, first responders from around the world have been watching San Antonio.
“San Antonio was one of the first metropolitan emergency systems in the United States to transport blood, and remains the only metropolitan emergency system to carry blood,” said Dr. CJ Winkler, deputy medical director for the San Antonio Fire Department. He said the city’s eight ambulances are transporting whole blood, which can be transfused to people who may bleed to death before reaching the hospital.

“We have given blood transfusions to patients in blunt hemorrhagic shock, which very often occurs in car accidents, and in penetrating trauma (usually gunshot wounds or knife stab wounds). “We had a young mother who was pregnant with her fourth child and she was bleeding. She was almost unresponsive in the bathtub,” he said. Ta. “We show that he increased the survival rate of blunt trauma patients by a factor of four. That’s four times as many lives saved. Certainly, this is an amazing achievement.”
Winkler said what he has learned over the past five years has been invaluable.
“Other parts of this country, and indeed other parts of the world, are looking to us for guidance,” he said. “And we’ve been very fortunate to be able to train a lot of people in the United States and abroad on how to start a prehospital blood program.”
