Apple is planning to make a ton of changes to the iPhone 16 lineup. The Pro models will be the highlight of this year, and given the number of improvements they bring, the iPhone 16 will be launched with unique design changes. We expect a completely new layout of the camera lens and the possibility of new sensors to enhance video recording capabilities. The latest iPhone 16 schematics reveal what to expect in terms of design.
Schematic reveals design details of iPhone 16 with action button and new camera layout
It was previously reported that the iPhone 16 could have a design similar to the iPhone X and iPhone 12. The overall design language remains the same, but the camera layout is expected to switch from diagonal to vertical. What this means is that both camera sensors on the back are aligned vertically. As seen in leaked iPhone 16 schematic (via Majinmu on X), the design from the back is quite similar to the iPhone 12.
The camera lens is placed perpendicular to the microphone on the camera plateau. You can see that the camera pedestal protrudes considerably compared to the current model. That could potentially mean the company is working on incorporating larger sensors. However, these are early iPhone 16 schematics, and the final design may differ from what we’re currently considering. The rest of the design is similar to the current model, but there are important differences.
You can also see a cutout for the flash on the back. It was previously reported that the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus may include a LiDAR scanner for spatial video recording. The LiDAR scanner is responsible for collecting depth details, and this feature is currently included in the latest iPhone 15 Pro models. Spatial video can be recorded and viewed with the Vision Pro headset. We previously learned that spatial video provides a more immersive experience in Apple’s recently announced headset. However, it remains to be seen whether relatively inexpensive iPhone models will offer LiDAR scanners this year.

If you look at it from the front, you can see that the notch is divided into two parts. However, this is not the case as the company will bridge the gap between the Face ID sensor and the front camera. The bezel is also almost the same as the current version. Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 models are expected to feature an action button, a change that is evident in the latest schematics. There is no information about the iPhone 16’s thickness as the dimensions of the device are blurred.
Apple plans to introduce a capture button on iPhone 16 Pro models. It was previously reported that the new capacitive button will also be available on non-Pro iPhone models. However, the schematic does not show the rumored capacitive button. Instead, the image shows a millimeter-wave antenna cutout below the side button or power button. We will update the information as soon as the details are known.
