Say goodbye to the Google Pay app, shutting down later this year

If you’re one of the many people in the US still using Google Pay instead of Google Wallet, we have bad news for you. Google is discontinuing its Pay app for US users and directing users to Wallet.

Today, Google announced that it is simplifying its payment apps in the United States. To that end, the company plans to shut down its Google Pay app on June 4, 2024. The company recommends that you switch to Google Wallet instead of Google Pay, which has similar functionality.

The Mountain View-based company lists three changes users should know about before the deadline. Also:

• Manage your balance: Users can continue to check their balances and transfer funds to their bank accounts by visiting the Google Pay website after June 4th.
• Offers and sales: Those looking for deals should use other options, such as Search’s Shop Deals feature.
• Peer-to-peer payments: After the deadline, users will no longer be able to send, request, or receive money through the U.S. version of the app.

Google points out that nothing changes in India and Singapore as they still use the Pay app. The company added that it will “continue to develop to meet the specific needs of these countries.”

This move isn’t surprising, as Google has been planning to migrate to Wallet for some time. While Pay is a simple app for making payments, Wallet is a one-stop destination to make payments and store your cards, passes, tickets, and more.
