Now, a TikTok user has gone viral after sharing an iPhone storage hack. In a video with more than 8.5 million views as of Saturday, TikTok user Hannah (@hannahkoumakis) shows how she learned to back up photos to her iPhone without paying for iCloud storage. .
“I was one year old today when I learned that I could connect my hard drive directly to my phone and save photos directly to the hard drive,” she explains.
Throughout the video, she shows how she uses an adapter to connect her hard drive directly to her iPhone and uses her phone to create folders on the hard drive and transfer footage and images.
Commenters were quick to share their surprises about this feature.
“Why are you paying Apple for storage when you can do this,” the user wrote.
“I look at 100,000 photos and pay Apple $10 a month,” another added.
Many people are discovering this feature for the first time, but it’s not new. As The Verge noted, “All iPhones that can run iOS 17 also support external storage devices, which means all iPhones up to 2018 include iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max. I will.”

That being said, users in the comments section also said that there are some things to be aware of before trying this trick.
“Make sure your phone’s settings save the photo file as the ‘most compatible’ file, rather than Apple’s default, which is unreadable by most computers,” the commenter said. .
“Never use the hard drive you used for another computer or you will lose everything on it,” the second man insisted.
