San Rafael has a new fire chief.
City officials announced Thursday that Abraham Roman has been promoted to fire chief for San Rafael and Marinwood. His new base salary will be $224,568 a year, according to Deputy City Manager John Stefanski.
Roman has been interim fire chief since January, after his predecessor, Darrin White, resigned in December.
Roman, a 38-year firefighter veteran, served as Berkeley’s fire chief before taking on the role of deputy chief in San Rafael in 2022.
“I am honored to be appointed fire chief for San Rafael and Marinwood,” he said Thursday. “I am deeply committed to the community and will work tirelessly to ensure their safety and well-being.”
The fire chief leads about 70 firefighters working across seven fire stations.
Roman grew up in Sonoma County and joined the volunteer fire department in the rural town of Freestone at age 14. He spent the majority of his career with the Berkeley Fire Department, where he served for nearly 24 years.
“San Rafael is fortunate to have Chief Roman as our new fire chief because he understands what’s important to our residents,” San Rafael Mayor Kate Collin said Thursday.
“He has been in the fire service since he was a teenager as a fire explorer and has a wide range of experience,” she said. “I’m excited that he will continue to bring his expertise and enthusiasm to San Rafael, as he has already demonstrated as interim fire chief.”
According to the city, Roman’s accomplishments with the fire department include developing the region’s wildfire prevention plan and managing a budget of more than $63 million.
“His extensive experience and proven leadership make him the ideal person to lead our fire department and continue our mission of providing excellent service to our community,” San Rafael City Manager Kristin Alilovich said.
