If you have a Samsung Galaxy device, you should check for this important update and install it as soon as it’s available. You should also be prepared for major changes to your device soon. This is a change you don’t want to miss…

Samsung’s March security rollout continues, with more budget models expected to be covered in addition to the premium devices initially targeted. For example, his US carrier unlocked S21 FE device joined the club just before the weekend.

Over the past two weeks, various variants of the S24, S23, and S22 (network, region, and model specs) have been updated first, followed by older and lower-priced versions. It is important to ensure that you download and install new software on your device. You should do this as soon as it is available for your network and model.

Here you can check whether your device will receive monthly updates.

Among the dozens of fixes for Android and Samsung, several high-risk vulnerabilities are patched, both of which open the door to some degree of device takeover, allowing malware to take control of part or all of the device. You will be able to do it.

The availability of the March update wasn’t the biggest news this week. Samsung is finally getting on board with Google’s seamless update roadshow, which it has avoided for years. Rather than performing a download, install, and reboot cycle just for new updates, the new system downloads and installs updates in the background to a secondary partition on the device, and then reboots from that partition on the next reboot. Masu.

Once the reboot occurs, the secondary partition becomes primary and the other partitions wait for the next update. This reduces the amount of time your device is normally unavailable and runs most of it in the background.

Google explains: “A/B System Update, also known as Seamless Update, ensures that a working boot system remains on disk during an over-the-air (OTA) update. This eliminates the possibility of a device becoming inactive after an update. This reduces the number of device replacements and device reflashes at repair and warranty centers.”

As you can see in the X post above, you can tell if a seamless update is installed by two progress bars: one for download/installation and one for verification. The Galaxy A55 has served as the guinea pig for Samsung’s first seamless update going live, which is expected to roll out more widely in the coming months. It’s a breath-taking time, waiting to see what devices will come out next.

It remains to be seen whether it will be extended to all models. If you’re expecting anything from a Samsung update, it’s that it’s complicated and requires you to refer to a checklist to figure out what to do, when to do it, and for how long.

So why now? Samsung may have been pushed rather than deciding to jump. A recent comment on his Android open source project suggested that the traditional alternative to the A/B (seamless) approach would be removed after his 8 years of parallel execution.

Samsung’s tenacity is legendary, considering seamless updates were first available in 2016. While this is a painful thorn in the side of the Android project, there would be no Android without Samsung, so it’s expected that there was a lot of discussion behind the scenes. Again, updates obviously need to be mysterious, so it remains to be seen what the broader approach will be from here.

While this may shorten the update process to just a minute or two of reboot while the device is unavailable, it does not simplify the combination of monthly Samsung and Android updates, and it does deployed across the configured devices.

However, no action is required on the part of the user. “A/B updates happen in the background and are no longer user-initiated,” he explains at Google. To avoid user confusion, it is recommended to schedule updates when the device is in idle his maintenance mode, such as at night or when he is on Wi-Fi. ”

Of course, this is still a long way from Apple’s one-stop shop. But as iPhone and Android become more and more similar, maybe they’ll get a little closer. Finally…
