The SAIS Europe community at Johns Hopkins University met Wednesday in central Bologna, Italy, to welcome Renaud Dehaus to his new role as SAIS Europe’s first president and SAIS associate dean.
International journalist Barbara Serra moderated the event and introduced a distinguished list of speakers, including SAIS Europe student and student body president Alejandra Flores Renteria. Speakers at the event reflected on the deep importance of cross-cultural collaboration in academia and the long-standing partnership between Johns Hopkins University, the University of Bologna, and the City of Bologna.
“Our center here in Bologna, founded almost 70 years ago, is similarly a transatlantic organization that connects both policymakers and academics on both sides of the Atlantic as we jointly confront the challenges of the Cold War and the necessary support. “I was inspired by the importance of maintaining deep connections to protect democracy and freedom,” Steinberg said. “Today, the continued importance of this mission is clear and perhaps more important than ever.”
In his remarks, Mr. Dehaus echoed Mr. Steinberg’s sentiments and emphasized the importance of institutions like SAIS Europe in a world where tensions and mistrust are rising between global players and their peoples. “We are now witnessing the emergence of a multipolar world, one in which the Western worldview faces many challenges, as evidenced by the Global South’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.” said. “Despite this growing polarization, global cooperation remains essential to address many challenges such as climate change and the rapid growth of technology.”
Dehaus said that he sees SAIS Europe as a positive force against such divisions, stating that “political communities are structures in which it is essential to maintain a sense of community in partnership. As it becomes more difficult, understanding the other side’s perspective becomes increasingly important. “Learning institutions, for example, can play an important role at this level by promoting mutual knowledge.” And let me say that, yes, SAIS Europe intends to play a role in this cultural initiative.”
Prior to his appointment as Director of the European University Institute, Mr. Dehaus was a professor and holder of the Jean Monnet European Law and Policy Research Chair at the Paris Institute of Sciences, where he founded and directed the Center for European Studies. He served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sciences Po from 2013 until 2016.
After studying law at the University of Liège in Belgium, he received a doctorate from the European University Institute. Before joining Science Po in 1999, he taught at the European University Institute and then at the University of Pisa. He was a visiting professor at the University of Florence (Cesare Alfieri), the University of Cologne, the University of Rome (LUISS), the University of Lausanne, the University of Europe, and the University of Michigan Law School.
SAIS Europe was founded in 1955 at a critical moment in the development of the post-war world order, with a focus on international affairs and frameworks for cross-border cooperation and peace. Today, SAIS Europe’s campus in Bologna is directly affiliated with SAIS’s flagship campus in Washington, D.C., and its long-standing program in Nanjing, China, as well as academic, European and neighboring countries in Africa and the Mediterranean Basin. Furthermore, we are conducting research and meeting activities in other countries as well.
