MOSCOW (Reuters) – A senior Russian military official has warned that the conflict in Ukraine could escalate into an all-out war in Europe, saying the chances of Russian troops being drawn into a new conflict have increased “significantly”. .

Colonel Vladimir Zaldonitsky, head of the Military Academy of the Russian Army General Staff, made the comment in an article in the Defense Ministry publication “Military Thought,” the state-run RIA news agency reported on Thursday.

RIA quoted him as saying, “The possibility of an escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, from the expansion of participants in “proxy forces” used in military conflicts with Russia to a large-scale war in Europe, cannot be ruled out.” ” he said.

“The main source of the military threat to our country is the anti-Russian policy of the United States and its allies, which are conducting a new type of hybrid warfare in order to weaken Russia in every possible way, limit its sovereignty, and destroy its territory. There’s ‘integrity,’ he reportedly said.

“The likelihood that our country will intentionally become involved in a new military conflict has increased significantly.”

The Ukraine war caused the most serious crisis in Russia’s relations with the West since the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. President Vladimir Putin He warned that if Western countries sent troops to fight in Ukraine, there was a risk of nuclear war.

President Putin’s decision to send tens of thousands of troops to Ukraine in February 2022 in a special military operation aimed at ensuring Russia’s own security against an increasingly hostile U.S.-backed Ukrainian leadership. was lowered. Kiev claims to be defending itself from imperial-style wars of conquest aimed at erasing its national identity.

Zaldnitsky’s comments come at a time when Western powers are rushing to support Ukraine with more arms and money after a failed Kyiv counterattack last summer saw Russian forces regain control on the battlefield. Announced.

The RIA said Zaldnitzky has a strong commitment to Russia, including placing greater emphasis on dealing with what he calls friendly countries to ensure Russia’s own security, and unifying Russian society as a whole around its defense needs. He added that he is advocating a number of changes in the way the military and security are organized.
