Rumor: iPhone 16 Pro will have the world’s thinnest smartphone bezels

The iPhone 16 Pro is expected to have a similar design to the iPhone 15 Pro, with some small changes: the screen size of the Pro and Pro Max will be slightly larger, and the visible black border around the screen may be significantly reduced.

This is according to IceUniverse, who say that the iPhone 16 Pro may actually have the thinnest smartphone bezels in the world.

The claim refers to the border surrounding the screen. The Dynamic Island Display cutout design is not expected to change this year and will look the same. Rumors also suggest that the high-end iPhone 17 in 2025 will have Face ID integrated under the display and the cutout reduced to a circular hole.

The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are expected to have even thinner bezels than they are now. This builds on the bezel reduction we’ve already seen when comparing the 14 Series to the 15 Series, where the bezels went from around 3.5mm to under 2mm. That 2mm boundary is expected to get even smaller on the iPhone 16 Pro this fall.

In fact, this latest rumor confirms earlier supply chain rumors: Apple will reportedly use BRS technology, or “Border Reduction Structure” technology, for its upcoming 16-inch Pro display. To achieve this, the traces and circuits close to the edge of the panel need to be bent downwards, which reportedly caused some manufacturing challenges during production ramp-up.

Not only does it look cool, but the smaller bezels help offset some of the increase in overall device size that comes with a physically larger screen.

The iPhone 16 Pro is expected to have a 6.1-inch to 6.3-inch display, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max will have a display measuring 6.7-inch to 6.9-inch diagonally. This will make the smartphone a little larger in the hand, but not by much if the bezels aren’t reduced at the same time.

Apple will formally unveil its iPhone 16 lineup this fall, likely at a media event in September, and aside from improved displays, new features are expected, including the latest A18 processor, a new physical pressure-sensitive “capture button” to help take photos and videos, and 5x zoom for the first time on a non-Max model.
