The latest iPhone cameras are very capable video recorders, but they usually require accessories such as lights and microphones to ensure professional-looking results. Audio equipment manufacturer Rode has announced his two gadgets aimed at simplifying this process. This eliminates the need for streamers to build cumbersome rigs in computer rooms or transport them to outdoor spaces.
The Rode Magnetic Mount is exactly what it sounds like. This is his MagSafe mount with his pair of connection points for accessories like the aforementioned lights and microphone. There are two adjustable cold shoe arms that allow you to use the phone in portrait or landscape mode. For the uninitiated, “cold shoe” refers to a metal connection bracket without power, and “hot shoe” refers to a metal connection bracket with electronic contacts.
This should work with any smartphone that fits snugly in a MagSafe-enabled case, not just the iPhone. The Rode magnetic mount is made from high-grade aluminum, which makes it expensive compared to many similar products on Amazon. It is priced at $90 and will start shipping on April 24th.
Rode also announced the Phone Cage, which promises to “turn your smartphone into a professional filmmaking device.” This is basically an enhanced version of the aforementioned accessory, with five cold shoe mounts for attaching anything a budding filmmaker might need, keeping your phone safe inside the cage. Hold it snugly.
To that end, the mount is integrated with various thread sizes for attaching accessories such as tripods and handles. There’s also a cable management slot, because five accessories can mean having five cables snaking around and ruining your perfect shot. Again, this is for his MagSafe models from iPhone 12 onwards. It also works with other brands of smartphones in a MagSafe compatible case. Phone Cage will start shipping on April 24th and will cost $120.
Rode recently acquired rival audio equipment company Mackie and announced a new effort to design and release products for content creators. These mounts also seem to be part of that push. The company also just launched a new dual-receiver wireless lapel microphone for multi-mic setups.
