Robert Hur clarified that he “did not exonerate” President Joe Biden at the end of the year-long special counsel investigation.
Rep. Pramila Jayapal, a Democrat from Washington state, made the comment while arguing with Mr. Hur over the conclusion. She claimed that Mr. Xu had “exonerated” Mr. Biden, but the special counsel quickly disputed that statement in a tense exchange.
“As a result of this long and expensive independent investigation, President Joe Biden has been completely exonerated of all documents discussed in your report. We do not believe the President violated any laws regarding possession or retention of classified materials. There was insufficient evidence that this was the case,” Jayapal said.
“I’ll have to go back and make note of the word ‘exculpation’ that you used,” Herr said. “That is not the language used in my report, and it is not part of my mandate as a prosecutor.”
“You exonerated him,” Jayapal retorted.
“I have not exonerated him. That word does not appear in the report,” Hoare said.
As a result of this exchange, Jayapal encouraged Herr to make statements that were clearly unhelpful to Biden, who he was actively trying to defend.
In addition to his belief that jurors would sympathize with the president because of Biden’s age and poor memory, Jayapal argued that Hu did not have enough evidence to conclude that Biden broke the law. While doing so, I brought this up.
