This is an app that previously tried to bring iMessage to Android, but it had serious security issues. After a failed attempt in early 2022, the Sunbird beta will be relaunched with new features and security enhancements.
Sunbird Beta (iMessage for Android) is restarted with second round of security fixes
Sunbird announced its intention to reintroduce iMessage for Android through a press statement published on its website. Ironically, the service was discontinued due to criticism. And that early stage was marred by a major security flaw.
Sunbird debuted in early 2022 as a way for Android users to experience iMessage functionality on their devices. However, there were some setbacks as people discovered several gaps in the system, such as publicly accessible shared media and real-time messaging. After this issue occurred, the service stopped working permanently.
According to a press release, Sunbird will return to the market with an increased focus on privacy and safety measures. The company has made significant changes to the system, including replacing the old architecture with the AV2 architecture, which focuses on secure messaging protocols.
According to Sunbird, this new architecture uses an MQTTS message broker that complies with the OASIS standard for secure messaging. Additionally, the application also integrates with RCS via Google Messages, just as it did in previous versions under the Nothing Chats brand.
Company changes staff to change stance on security
Sunbird has made changes within its organization and strengthened its stance on security issues. The company has hired CIPHER, his independent cyber security consultancy, as one of his official advisors alongside Jared Jordan, who served as his former director of engineering for Gmail at Google.
Sunbird acknowledges that there have been security breaches in the past few years that have actually caused it to lose customer trust, but it has chosen to focus on providing security and openness while restarting its service. The company’s efforts to fix flaws and strengthen security demonstrate that Sunbird is committed to ensuring a secure messaging system for its users.
Users will closely monitor Sunbird’s actions upon its return to the market to ensure that it complies with strict security regulations regarding personal data and communication privacy.
