One of Britain’s most respected cardiologists has taken up a prestigious post at the University of Aberdeen that has stood for centuries.

Professor Michael Freneau, who is also a consultant cardiologist at NHS Grampian, has been appointed Regius Professor of Medicine. *

It is a return to the North East for the father-of-two, who joined Aberdeen from the University of Birmingham and previously served as chair of cardiology at the British Heart Foundation.

Professor Freneux held the posts of House Officer and Senior House Officer in London, where he also studied medicine, and was registrar at Woodend Hospital in Aberdeen and Aberdeen Royal Infirmary before moving to New Zealand, Australia and Cardiff. .

Professor Freneau’s main funder is the British Heart Foundation, which has awarded millions of pounds worth of grants to cardiologists over the years.

One of his research specialties is a condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a thickening of the heart muscle that affects 1 in 5,000 people.

In a small number of cases, the condition only becomes apparent when a seemingly healthy young person suddenly collapses and dies, perhaps while playing sports.

Professor Freneau’s research also seeks to improve the health and quality of life of heart failure patients. Heart failure is the most common cause of hospitalization in the over-60s and is associated with very high mortality rates, worse than most common cancers, for example. lung cancer.

One of the professor’s research focuses on new treatments for heart failure based on little-used anti-anginal drugs.

Professor Freneau also studies the links between heart disease, depression, and cortisol, the “stress hormone” that is naturally produced in our bodies.

Aberdeen’s renowned medical imaging facility has lured cardiologists back to Aberdeen.

He said: “It is a great honor to be appointed to the historic post of Regius Professor of Medicine at the University of Aberdeen.

“I am delighted to be returning to Aberdeen and am very much looking forward to the exciting prospects ahead.”

Marjorie Burns, Director of the British Heart Foundation (BHF) Scotland, congratulated Professor Freneux on his prestigious appointment. She said: “The Nation’s Heart Charity is extremely proud to be able to fund outstanding researchers like Professor Freneau. We are particularly interested in his work in the field of heart failure, as he is raising significant funds.”
