LAXON β€” The Eastern Panhandle Science and Engineering Fair for elementary and middle school students was held Friday at the Ranson Civic Center, drawing students from all over the region to compete and share their efforts.

The students took turns presenting their projects to the judges and talking about the research they had prepared for the event.

There were various categories such as animal science, medicine, chemistry, and engineering. The fair is designed for students to research and present on topics of their choice and learn important professional skills that will help them in the future. Students are free to choose science topics that interest them.

Shane Price is the Fair Director and worked hard to put this event together with his wife Lisa Price and many other judges, teachers and volunteers. Shane started working at Hedgesville High School in 2013. She moved to Jefferson County in 2016 and she has been working at the fair ever since.

Many of the judges have been working at the fair for a long time as well, and they give students the opportunity to share their struggles.

“Mr. Price loves science, he loves kids, and he loves encouraging kids to do science,” Lisa Price said. “He has been a teacher for many years and has taught middle school and high school. He loves being involved in this activity, even though it is a huge amount of work.”

First, second and third place students in each category were awarded special medals, with first place winners earning a spot at the State Science and Engineering Fair in Charleston later this year . It gives them a great opportunity to learn and continue to develop their skills at an even higher level.

β€œThe fair is important because kids are interested in science,” Lisa said. “This really shows their hard work and talent, promotes that interest, and is good for all of us. Some of the children’s projects I’ve seen so far have been really great. , it also provides students with the opportunity to meet adults and professionals already involved in the science field who can help them build a future career in science.”

With over 130 different projects from eight different counties, the exhibition showcased many talented young people with bright futures in the scientific field.
