Police have arrested a 27-year-old salesman for allegedly stealing jewelery worth Rs 1,050 crore from a shop in Thane city, Maharashtra, officials said on Sunday.

According to Senior Inspector Abhay Mahajan of Naupada Police Station, the suspect Rahul Jayantilal Mehta, who had been living a lavish lifestyle with stolen funds, was arrested on March 26 in the Mira Road area where he had come to meet his girlfriend. It was done.

The owner of a jewelery shop in Talao Palli area had lodged a police complaint in connection with the theft on March 25, after which an FIR was registered against the accused under Section 408 (treachery of trust by clerk or servant) of the Indian Penal Code. was held.

The suspect, who was in charge of sales supervision at the store, is suspected of stealing 70 pieces of jewelry weighing approximately 1.59 kg and valued at approximately 1,055,555,766 rupees between November 2023 and March 2024. officials said.

The defendant had been absent from work since March 8, 2024, and was reported missing by his wife on March 15.

According to the investigation, the suspect had traveled to neighboring Mumbai, Indore in Madhya Pradesh state and Gujarat state to evade arrest.

Police received information that he was planning to come to Mira Road area here on March 26 to meet his girlfriend.

Based on this information, police maintained surveillance and arrested the suspect when he arrived, officials said.

After interrogating the man, police learned that he was using the money raised from the thefts to maintain a lavish lifestyle, frequently visiting pubs and five-star hotels.

Police said so far 900 grams of jewelery worth around Rs 62.1 million has been recovered from the accused.
