LUCKNOW: With the BJP state unit heading for a much-needed revamp, the battle for the post of Mahila Morcha chief is shaping up to be an interesting one. The post has to be decided through voting and party sources say that while incumbent Darshana Singh is intensifying efforts to retain the post, the current general secretary has emerged as the main challenger.
It has been almost a year since Swatantra Dev Singh took over as state BJP chief, but he has not been able to have his own team so far. Recently, Singh told TOI that the new executive team will be announced once the lockdown lifting process begins.
Once the state executive is announced, various wings of the organisation, including the Yuva Morcha, Mahalla Morcha and Kisan Morcha, will also be restructured and new officers will be inducted.
“A situation is emerging in the state BJP that pits up-and-coming leaders against the old guard. While this renewal is a healthy sign, it has also created tough competition between senior and junior leaders. This means that senior leaders like the current party president are facing tough competition from junior leaders,” said a political analyst.
Darshana was appointed head of the women’s wing when Mahendra Nath Pandey was the state’s chief minister. Pandey rose to become a Union minister. Both belong to Chanduari district, as does Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
She remained active during the lockdown and was tireless in helping migrant workers by distributing relief materials, masks and other essentials. “I have tried my best to live up to the expectations of the party and the national leadership,” Darshana said.
Interestingly, Archana Mishra, who was recommended by Darshana to take up the post of Morcha general secretary, is now well established in the organisation. She was recently appointed state representative for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship scheme, Scheme Ujjaula, under which LPG cylinders are distributed to the poor and needy.
BJP officials in the state said it would be a close contest between veteran and up-and-coming candidates.
