Questions arise over Katie Britt’s State of the Union address

In a rebuttal to President Biden’s State of the Union address Thursday night, Alabama Republican Sen. Katie Britt told the story of a Mexican woman who became a victim of sex trafficking at the age of 12 and told the story of a Mexican woman who became a victim of sex trafficking at the age of 12. Responsibility was placed at the feet of the flow. management.

“President Biden’s border policies are disgraceful,” she said.

This story, while difficult to understand, was highly misleading.

Although Britt did not name the victim in her speech, she had previously shared the story of a woman who appeared to be the same person based on congressional testimony, news releases and news reports.

The woman, Carla Jacinto Romero, is a Mexican citizen who does not live in the United States, but has frequently spoken about her experience being forced into a sex slave for four years. In 2023, Jacinto attended an event near the Texas-Mexico border, where three senators, including Britt, also attended. In a video released shortly after that trip, Britt talked about her experience with Jacinto.

“We cannot tolerate this happening in a third world country,” Britt said in a speech Thursday about the tragic incident as part of a critique of President Biden’s border policies. She added, “This is the United States of America, and I think it’s past time for us to start acting like that.”

In fact, as independent journalist Jonathan Katz first reported on TikTok on Friday, Jacinto’s experience did not occur in the United States. She testified that her traumatic experience, in which she was kidnapped in Mexico City and raped thousands of times, all happened in Mexico. She further states that her abduction occurred in 2002 and she was rescued in 2006. Ms. Jacinto still lives in Mexico, and it appears that she has never lived in the United States and that she has never sought asylum in the United States.

In other words, nothing like this happened during President Biden’s administration. But the first-term senator still strongly suggests that the president could have somehow prevented the incident from occurring, using rhetoric that appears to be tailored to stoke public fear about immigration. I didn’t stop doing it.

“We know that President Biden did not simply create this border crisis,” she said. “He invited me.”

Jacinto did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Britt’s publicist, Sean Ross, stood behind her during her speech.

“Senator Britt was 100% correct,” he said in a statement. “And now, more than ever, there are more innocent victims of this kind of abhorrent and brutal human trafficking by cartels.” The policy has empowered cartels and acted as a magnet for historic levels of migrants to make the perilous journey to the border.

How directly responsible is Biden for what Jacinto went through, or what does this anecdote about sex trafficking in another country have to do with U.S. border policy? He did not immediately respond to subsequent questions.
