The smallest puppy ever to take part in the Puppy Bowl died unexpectedly on the way to the hospital for tests, according to Bosley Place.
Sweet Pea born in July. John Wang, who was born in Tennessee and raised in Georgia, passed away on November 20, 2023 due to kidney deformity. Jennifer Siegel, Bosley’s Place animal care manager, confirmed this to USA TODAY.
“Sweet Pea lived a charmed life,” Siegel said. “She was a very loving person. Everyone loved Sweet Pea. When she came to help us, we knew she was going to be a medical nightmare. I We made sure she was well taken care of and gave her the best life possible given her short time to live.”
Sweet Pea was born with hydrocephalus, a neurological disorder caused by the buildup of cerebrospinal fluid within the brain cavity. There was also a hole in her heart, Siegel said.

“She came to our aid on her deathbed,” Siegel said. “I started medical diagnostics and tests. When she was about four weeks old, there was only so much we could do because she was so small. Siegel told USA TODAY during production that he knew Sweet Pea would steal people’s hearts. At 1.7 pounds, Sweet Pea was the smallest puppy ever to compete in the Puppy Bowl, according to Animal Planet.
After production, on November 5, 2023, Sweet Pea worked in the kissing booth at Bosley’s Birthday Party, the rescue group’s annual fundraiser. Siegel said Sweet Pea kissed hundreds of people there for the event, which raised more than $26,000.

A few weeks later, tragedy struck. Siegel took Sweet Pea to her first medical checkup at the University of Georgia, where Sweet Pea died in her lap in the car. Her subsequent autopsy revealed that she died because her kidneys were deformed and could not process her proteins.
“She should be seen as a legacy for rescue,” Siegel said. “Sweet Pea lived her amazing life and brought smiles to the faces of thousands of people.”

When the Puppy Bowl aired on Feb. 11, Siegel said he watched it privately. She knew it would be an emotional day for her. She said: “It was heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time.”
