GREENSBORO, N.C. — President Donald Trump makes a new attempt to reverse criticism that he is a threat to democracy, accusing President Biden without evidence of colluding against the United States with policies at the southern border. did.

“Biden’s actions at the border are a conspiracy to overthrow the United States of America,” Trump told the audience. “He talks about democracy. He is a danger to democracy.”

President Trump’s remarks came as he faces 91 charges in four criminal cases. Two of those four lawsuits are related to Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. Special Counsel Jack Smith has charged President Trump with “conspiracy to defraud” the United States as part of his investigation into the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. President Trump has denied any wrongdoing and has sought to portray the incident as politically motivated by him.

Saturday’s speech was a fusion of two of Trump’s campaign strategies for the 2024 presidential election: seeking to turn the tables on Biden on anti-democracy attacks and making immigration a central focus. It became a thing. Amid reports and historians’ concerns that President Trump’s second term will be more authoritarian than his first, Biden and the Democratic Party are making the future of democracy an important part of their campaign against the former president. It is placed in the important part.

President Trump’s statement on Saturday is the latest in a long pattern of responding to attacks by leveling similar accusations at his opponents. On the third anniversary of the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, President Trump, who was impeached but acquitted by the Senate on charges of inciting insurrection, attempted to use the word “insurrection” against his political opponents.

At a rally there, President Trump continued to falsely claim that the 2020 election was “rigged.” During the event at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex, his supporters waved signs that read “Too Big to Rig,” as the Republican nomination is contested in 15 states, including North Carolina. This is an effort to increase voter turnout ahead of Super Tuesday.

During his speech, President Trump again portrayed immigrants as committing an “invasion” and increased his use of the term “immigration crime.” Federal data shows most people apprehended at the southern border have no criminal convictions, and experts say most evidence shows illegal immigrants do not lead to further crimes.

Immigration advocates have accused President Trump of using racist rhetoric against immigrants and say they fear it could incite violence against immigrants. Among the migrants seeking entry to the southern border are families traveling with children and record numbers of minors arriving without their parents.

Trump and Biden made dueling visits to the southern border on Thursday. Polls show the border will be a weak point for Biden in the November election. Under the Biden administration, the number of people detained by U.S. Border Patrol has reached the highest level in the agency’s 100-year history, averaging 2 million people a year.

President Trump often speaks in exaggerated terms about immigrants seeking entry. Later in his speech, Trump suggested that Biden was bringing in “foreign troops.”

“That’s why the central question in this election is whether the foreign troops Joe Biden has smuggled across the border will be allowed to stay or will they be told to get out of here and go back to their countries. Home I’ll take you home,” he said, to cheers.

Biden campaign spokesperson Ammar Moussa said in a statement: “President Trump has once again vetoed the fairest and toughest border security bill in decades, believing it would help his campaign.” “I’m trying to look away,” he countered. sad. “

During Biden’s visit to Brownsville, Texas, on Thursday, the president accused Trump of nullifying a bipartisan border security deal in the Senate that tied border reform to aid to Ukraine. “Instead of playing politics with this issue, please join me, or join me, in asking Congress to pass this bipartisan border security bill,” Biden said. “We can do it together.”

President Trump also had an event planned for Saturday night in Richmond. The former president is on track to win the Republican nomination, and his campaign expects his bid to be completed this month. During his speech in North Carolina, President Trump barely mentioned his remaining chief opponent, former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley.
