Former President Donald Trump has appealed the decision in the E. Jean Carroll defamation lawsuit and posted bail of $91.63 million.
Trump’s bail notice and appeal were filed Friday in federal court in New York.
In January, a federal jury found that Trump denied raping Carroll, made disparaging comments that she wasn’t his type, and accused Carroll of fabricating the allegations to boost book sales. Carroll was ordered to pay $83.3 million in damages. Carroll will not receive any award money during his appeal.
Insurance company Chubb underwrote the bond for Trump, which the former president signed on Tuesday. Under the terms of the bond, Mr. Chubb only secures an appeal of the $83.3 million judgment and does not guarantee his future appeals.
The bond amount is larger than the judgment because the district court typically requires the party to post 110% of the bond.
President Trump also faces a March 25 deadline to provide an additional $454 million in the New York attorney general’s civil fraud case.
In Carroll’s case, Trump argued that the jury award was excessive and should be reduced. During the trial, Carroll’s lawyers told jurors that Trump should be awarded significant damages to actually stop his defamatory behavior.
In addition to these two sentences against him, Trump also faces mounting legal costs in four criminal cases he is facing in his bid for re-election.
