President Trump holds rallies in Wisconsin and Michigan as polls tighten

After a long break from campaigning, Donald Trump heads to Wisconsin and Michigan next week. His trip to the Midwest comes as the latest polls show the race in these key battleground states is heating up.

A Bloomberg News/Morning Consult poll released March 26 shows President Joe Biden leading in six battleground states, with the president leading in Wisconsin for the first time in six polls and Trump leading in Michigan. The same percentage as the president. A February poll by the same pollster showed Trump leading in both states.

Trump’s April 2 Green Bay rally and Grand Rapids speech will be his first traditional campaign events in more than two weeks since his March 16 Ohio rally (Trump recently appeared in court A wake for a New York City police officer (who held a press conference after his murder). )

Mr. Trump’s lack of campaign activity in recent weeks stands in sharp contrast to Mr. Biden. The president recently energized the battleground state with a series of rallies and other campaign events.

Mr. Biden used the opportunity to portray Mr. Trump as lackluster and reverse attacks made against the president by Mr. Trump and his supporters.

Tudor Dixon, Republican candidate for Michigan governor, addresses the crowd as she invites her to the stage during a speech at the Macomb Community College Sports and Expo Center in Warren on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022. Former President Donald Trump listens to speak. He plans to return to Michigan for a campaign event on April 2nd.

Biden attacks 8 states in 18 days

Biden departed after the March 7 State of the Union address and held 18 days of campaign events in Georgia, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Nevada, Michigan, North Carolina and New Hampshire.

“Folks, we’re seeing incredible enthusiasm across the country,” Biden said Tuesday at a fundraiser at a hotel in Raleigh, North Carolina, before going on to talk about all the states he’s recently visited. Ta.

in Video posted on X ThursdayThe Biden campaign emphasized Biden’s solid schedule and contrasted it with footage of Trump on the golf course.

President Trump bragged on Truth Social on March 24 that he had won twice at one of his golf courses and received an award that night.

“Let me tell you this: There are differences between the two candidates in this election,” Biden wrote on top of the video after previously mocking Trump for boasting about his golf championships.

Biden: “Congratulations, Donald. What a great accomplishment.” He said this in response to President Trump’s Truth Social golf post.

Trump’s court campaign

Trump’s legal and financial problems may have contributed to his suspension of campaign activities. He was in a Manhattan courtroom on March 25 for a hearing in a criminal case accusing him of business fraud stemming from hush-money payments to adult film actresses. That trial begins April 15th.

In 2016, Mr. Trump won Wisconsin and Michigan, states that had long backed Democrats, on his way to the White House, but Mr. Biden won again in 2020. These states could become decisive in 2024.

Trump’s new campaign moves come as his team has previously minimized investment in field operations in key battleground states. Trump is lagging behind Biden in fundraising, according to campaign finance reports.

“There are more than 100 polls showing President Trump with a landslide lead over Joe Biden, including Joe Biden leading in key battleground states and winning by double digits among independents. It includes recent polling,” Trump campaign spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt told USA Today.

Biden’s fundraiser Thursday in New York City with former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton raised more than $26 million, according to his campaign. President Trump will hold a major fundraiser in Palm Beach next week with Republican mega-donors.

Michigan Republican Party Chairman Pete Hoekstra recently told The Associated Press that the Republican National Committee has done little in the state to prepare for 2024, calling it a “skeletal” operation at this point. He said he was there.

“We have the message, the strategy, and the money to lead President Trump to victory on November 5,” Chris Lacivita, a senior adviser to the Trump campaign, said in a statement this week.

A Bloomberg News/Morning Consult poll shows Biden leading in Michigan and Wisconsin, but an average of recent Real Clear Politics polls shows Biden leading in both states and the rest. The results show that Trump is leading in the battleground area.

Spencer Kimball, head of polling at Emerson College, said that while recent Emerson College polls show Trump leading in Michigan and Wisconsin, it’s within the margin of error. “It shows it’s a close game.”

USA TODAY reporter David Jackson contributed to this report.
