President Trump doubles down on attacks on immigrants who ‘poison’ country

Former President Donald J. Trump emphasized in an interview aired Sunday that immigrants “contaminate the blood” of this country, using the same word as Hitler.

“Why do you use words like ‘vermin’ and ‘blood poison’?” media critic and interviewer Howard Kurtz asked on Fox News. “You know, the press immediately reacts to this and says, ‘Well, that’s the kind of language that Hitler and Mussolini used.'”

“Because our country They are being poisoned,” Trump responded.

He also reiterated his repeated assertion that immigrants crossing the southern border are criminals pouring in from prisons and psychiatric hospitals.

The evidence doesn’t support that. Border officials say most of the migrants are families fleeing violence or poverty, and despite some high-profile incidents, data shows no increase in crime attributable to migrants. Crime rates, including homicide, decreased last year.

“We can be nice about it and we can talk about it and say, ‘Oh, I want to be politically correct,'” Trump said. “But there are people who come in from prisons and jails, long-term killers, people who have been sentenced to spend the rest of their lives in prison in some country, many people have never heard of. There are also others. They have all been released into our country.”

He continued: “These people are criminals at the highest level, and we have insane asylums and psychiatric hospitals. The difference I always say is, ‘The Silence of the Lambs.’ You know, it’s a psychiatric hospital on steroids.” Okay? And those mental hospitals and psychiatric hospitals are being removed in the United States, and then we’re inundated with terrorists at levels we’ve never seen before.”

Trump’s demonization of immigrants has been a mainstay of his campaign since he first announced his campaign in 2015 with a speech calling Mexicans rapists. But in the current campaign, his rhetoric has become more extreme and his dehumanization more blatant.

In addition to using the phrase “poison the blood,” which he started saying last fall, he has recently gone even further by demonizing immigrants in public comments. In a speech in Ohio on Saturday, he called immigrants “animals” and said, “I don’t know if I would call them ‘human beings’ in some cases.” In my opinion, they are not human. ”

He has similarly disparaged his political opponents, vowing in November to “eradicate” the “radical left-wing thugs who live like vermin within our country.”

The nearly hour-long interview, which aired on Fox News on Sunday, covered topics such as abortion, NATO and the potential ban on TikTok, which the House of Representatives passed on a bipartisan basis last week and which Mr. Trump recently turned against. A wide range of topics were covered.

He said he didn’t want to ban TikTok because it would force more people to use Facebook, which would be worse. He denied that his own reversal was related to a recent meeting with a billionaire who owns a stake in the company that owns TikTok.

He said he would make a decision on the abortion proposal “soon.” He has privately said he supports a 16-week abortion ban, and his allies hope he will take executive and executive action to effectively ban abortions without going through the legislative process. There is. He didn’t go into details in the interview, deflecting by saying Democrats support late-term abortions (which account for less than 1 percent of procedures) and “post-natal” abortions (which don’t exist).

Weeks after saying he would encourage NATO members who haven’t paid enough to the alliance to invade Russia, he said the result was that “countries that were paying late or not paying at all are now paying.” made a false claim. The alliance’s payment structure isn’t working as Trump said it would — some countries have not fulfilled their informal commitments to spend 2% of their GDP on defense, but the alliance has allowed them to pay their dues. No one is paying — nothing significant has changed since Trump’s comments. last month.

Trump also repeated his most persistent lie: that the 2020 election was stolen from him.

“We can cut this down if we want to. But the election was rigged,” he said.
